I\'ve always been a fan of Michael Nyman\'s site. I like the clean, modern, minimalistic vibe. I find it to be more approachable and sophisticated than heavy flash sites, while still maintaining a professional look.

I\'m definately going to take a page (pun intended) from Nymans site when I get around to doing mine.

Re: Website????? Help the kid please!

Thanks guys! Thanks for the links too....

I can honestly say \"I hate\" Michael Kamen\'s site (no offense), but it\'s way too convoluted for my
taste. If you are successful maybe people are a bit more forgiving when viewing sites (but i doubt
it!). I know that my wife (who works in the industry) hardly knows how to work a computer... so
I want it to \"NOT\" be confusing. I\'m probably not as much of a tech head as most of the people
on this site (although my studio is pretty complex and substantial). The point is: If \"I\" cant
figure out where to click, well then it\'s a bad design... and therefore useless.

I believe less is more UNTIL we are at a place with computers where you don\'t go to sites and are
told you need to download XYZ \"to view this site\". As well, who wants to sit around and wait for
some stupid flash graphic to spell out the composers name O-N-E... L-E-T-T-E-R... A-T..
A.... T-I-M-E....????? Can you say presumptuous?

That would be my rant!

Anyway......

I\'m looking to do something with a background color of white, with all the writing in gray. But I
want it to look hip and slick. I\'d like a bit of minimal flash (if that\'s possible), just to have some
movement on the site.

Kid,

Thanks for this link. I agree this is the way to go.
Aesthetically pleasing, fast loading and not convoluted. Minimalist. Elegant. Trés hip.

Can any of you give me some leads?

***Please post your site links so I can see what yours looks like. Also can you tell me how
much you paid for yours, as well as what it costs monthly. I\'m hoping to have something with

BTW.. Do I need to know HTML to add tunes etc?

Thanks!

Contact my son Chris at admin@toogoodstudios.com. Chris is doing our web site (I\'m behind in finishing it) at www.lacomposers.com, www.truespec.com, plus in LA, www.soundworksstudio.net, http://www.sequoiadigital.com/ . All have been set up to be simple, fast, and businesslike.

For slickness, I visited several dozen composer web sites. Nearly all attempt to look \"hot\" by using an all black background with white text, but it\'s awful to read.

Two other composer sites worth looking at are;

www.michaelkamen.com (check out the downloads section)

www.andybrick.com

http://www.johnwilliams.org/

Keep in mind people will be coming to:

1. hear your demos
2. see the projects you\'re currently doing
3. possibly your studio set up

Jay, I think you missed my specifically referencing you to the download page.

Here, Kamen has examples in, RealAudio, downloadable score demonstrations using Sibelius, and PDFs, etc. He\'s even provided links in case you don\'t have one of those media players available.

Overall, I feel this is an excellent use of the web to make your case.

I agree, the site could be much simpler. I liked Nyman\'s quite a bit.

Kid,

There should be many easy-to-use website editors available that require very little practice, like frontpage or macromedia dreamweaver.

People always like different things, but here\'s a couple of things I always prefer in a composers website.

I can\'t stand websites with sound. I\'m propably listening to music while browsing and most website sounds are just distracting. Sometimes backround music is also a dumb idea because it interferes with what your listening at the moment, and I never seem to find the \"audio off\" -button when it\'s needed.

Making your music available as a download, instead of using a low-quality stream, is much more comfortable to the user (everybody should know how to download an mp3 file by now...) and eventually saves up some bandwidth.

I prefer a dark backround if there\'s not much stuff on the website yet. It feels more relaxed and calm. A big site with lots of things going on usually feels clearer with a white backround.

Pictures are always a good thing, but sometimes they take years to load and I never find myself revisiting a site like that. I\'m not a flash basher (sounds like the lamest comic book hero of all time) but sometimes it feels like flash sites are updated rarely, because it\'s a more complicated process.

And of course a clear user interface is a must. No weird \"hey, try to determine what this logo means\"- buttons. They may be ok for a visual artist\'s website though.

Some of my favorite websites linked from NS are

http://www.samhulick.com
http://www.changeling-sound.com
http://www.doggettstudios.com
http://www.maartenspruijt.com

I obviously haven\'t visited every site there is, but I find these very pleasing and nice.
