Mahler: Symphony 4, 3rd movement: "Ruhevoll"

Dear all,

here is another one of those long slow movements from Gustav Mahler's Symphonies: this time I took the rendition of the 3rd movement from Symphony #4. which I had created more than 10 years ago with soundfonts, and transformed it using the Garritan Personal Orchestra 4.

It may still need some tweeking in terms of tempo, orchestra instrument balance, and articulation (velocity, attack), but I hope that you enjoy it anyway.

Hi Reinhold, just getting to this now.

Actually that myspace player is a weird fickle thing...it will not work when I'm in work, but works at home...but I digress...

I mentioned before (I think), I'm not overally familiar with Mahler - I know I should get out more. Boy did he write long pieces.

This is awesome. There's a great amount of expression in this, and there is so much of this where I thought I was listening to a real orchestra. The woodwind work is fantastic. Everything is, really, even the strings (though of course, they have that lack of resonance that comes with GPO) - but you masked it extremely well just about everywhere.

The feeling and expression of the many crescendos are out of this world, due to the great music and the great rendering. It goes to show that with great orchestration and care, it can sound amazing.

This rendition has a total of 64 tracks, using 5 instances of the Aria player. I am layering various instrument samples, and this to some extend provides a fuller sound, although much more could still be done (for example, I am only doubling most wind instruments, not tripling as it actually is required in the score).

Mahler's music is just fabulous, in its wide range of expressivity within one single movement. I really enjoy this, when building up the music from the score bottom to the flutes and step by step hear the sound coming all together.

I think we must raise funds here at Garritan Central
to hire you an orchestra to conduct in the real world.

I hope to create more music with the GPO and also with the new sample libraries, once they come out and are available.

Not sure I could work with a "real" orchestra - I quite like that I can draw velocities and expression curves on the PC screen; I imagine that drawing them into air as a real conductor is quite difficult....
