    Annoying change to forums!

I am sure that Garritan and Co is not responsible, but whatever outfit handles the forums. In fact, I had the exact same problem last night with a different forum.

A very annoying toolbar at the bottom, that I never chose to have running, and that does not have an option to turn it off--flashing "connect" messages, Facetwit, Twitbook, blah, blah, blah. It is really annoying, and distracts from reading the messages. (Probably wastes computer memory as well, as well as screen real estate.)

I was finally able to get rid of it using Adblock Plus in Firefox. (Not that ABP did it automatically no. I added a filter called *wipiya* (the site where the crap is coming from had that name), and that blocked it. (At the other site last night, it was "weeblo".

Others may not know how to do that though, and I am afraid they may change the name of their site every day, and next time I come, the crap at the bottom will be back.

I'm wondering if a complaint could be made to those who really run the board, about this very annoying new thing. Now, I know it is a Northern Sounds board. But I doubt the folks at Northern Sounds are behind it either. They probably go through one of those BBS services that handle a lot of different forums, and it is that service, that just got the idea that they could make money, by annoying people with that unwanted toolbar at the bottom.

What could be done about it? (Could perhaps Garritan and Northern Sounds put in a complaint to those running the board?

    Anyone else find it annoying?

    Thank you.

    maiki,

I find it annoying too and especially since it now seems to be needed for chat (we never had this before).

I'll get in touch with the admins and see what, if anything, can be done.

    Thanks for mentioning it.

Does anyone else have any thoughts about the "social network" popups and chat sign-ins?

Annoying is not the word or words I would use to discribe it but to answer your question.....yes.

We're all with you in your annoyance, maiki.

Several months ago, when Northern Sounds (the Forum host) made the changes, we had threads about the changes, and people voiced their outrage. Now we've had to adapt to the downgrade changes best we can - because if humanity has one attribute in common, its the tenacity in the desire and ability to adapt to adverse circumstances.

But we're all in agreement - this is not the Forum we grew accustomed to and now love only in memory. The Garritan banner ads are gone, the good set of smileys are gone, we have the obnoxious social network ads/links/whatever the heck they are at the bottom of the screen.

I am beyond positive that the changes in the way this forum functions is directly related to the huge dip in attendance. Now isn't that a shame?

I don't like the toolbar either BUT after signing in to the forum I am able to minimize it and I get no flashing or other annoyances - there is just a small tab in the lower right corner that sez "Tools" and its stays that way until I clear my internet cache completely.

But I don't like the chat format or the toolbar.
In theory there is no difference between theory and practice, but in practice there is.

    Hello Gary,

I agree and, for me, 'annoying' isn't the word.

I'd better not say too much otherwise I might end up saying what I really think about the person or persons who see fit to inflict such an odious object into our forum experience.

However, there is a way to beat it for those of us who use Firefox as follows:

Install the Firefox 'No Script' plugin.
In 'No Script', allow all scripts globally (so that you can have normal browsing).
Login to our forums as normal.
In the 'No Script Untrusted Sites' block the following:
    wibya.com
    facebook.net

    I've also blocked openx.org and google-analytics.com

    That's it. No more nonsense.

As one member mentioned when this was first discussed a while back, it's not good enough that we have to go researching and chasing third-party tricks to rid ourselves of some rubbish so that we are able to resume an enjoyable forum experience.

Oh, heck, I just put a strip of Duct Tape® across the
bottom of my screen... so I don't even see that
    anymore.

    Best,

An extremely useless but instant gratification solution:

Copy and paste the following into your browser's address bar:

    Code:
    javascript:$('#wibiyaToolbar').hide()
Then hit enter. Enjoy the lack of the wibiya toolbar until you decide to change the page!
