Be sure NOT to install IE8 on your XP machines. Doesn't paly well with GS.

You might also check out G-Palyer, now avaiable for Windows.

Cool Re: Garritan Purchases Giga Technology Assets from Tascam

Just grabbed G-Player... it does offer nice easy drop down menu access to the different patches within a .gig file, but its almost as expensive at $149, as the upgrade to GS4 ($199). Hmmm. Not such a "great" advantage then from what I can see. Plus it only has a 32 bit version available as well. Oh well..

True, but at least it's not a dead product. I've heard that a 64 version is in the works, but who knows. There's another one called Samplelord, which I didn't like as much.

I have yet to buy either; sort of hedging my bets

GS 4 will not work on an XP SP3 machine. The only way for it to work is install it on XP SP2 then add SP3.

Microsoft Security Essentials will also kill GS 3 and 4 on XP.

Re: Garritan Purchases Giga Technology Assets from Tascam

I wonder if G-Player was written by some former Tascam engineer who brought a gigastudio sdk with him to his new job? Or is this technology open enough for any developers to have access to the contents of a giga file?

So if GigaStudio code is too big to be "taken over" by Garritan - being 2 million lines - what reason would you have to buy Gigastudio technology. It seems logical that they are going to come up with something of their own that works with giga libraries.

Two reasons to buy a technology.

    1) to kill it off and elliminating the competition from the market place

    2) to adopt it and enhance your position in the market

    Cheers,
    Joe

Re: Garritan Purchases Giga Technology Assets from Tascam

I looked at their web page and the video demo.

Does the G-Player require a dongle?

What scares me, I recently blew out my dongle for Cubase. Stopped working. Good news, Steinberg/Yamaha replaced it, and it all went smoothly.

What if this happened to my GVI and GS4?
    SOOL, that's what!

I have a lot of Giga sounds and want to be able to use them without converting them.

    Thanks for your help

I recently bought G-Player and have been very happy with the performance. You'll be glad to hear that there's no dongle - you get a licence key.

I checked it out when it was first released (they have a demo available which is well worth trying if you're considering it, just so you know what you're buying into) and didn't buy it because too many of my gigs sounded different when played through it. However I was discussing it a few more months down the line and a user told me he had none of the problems I had had. So I downloaded the newer version demo and true enough the problems had been fixed.

It's still got some minor playback niggles (no show-stoppers though) and the developer is releasing updates at a good rate. It is also now 32 bit and 64 bit for Windows.

So it looks like G-Player is the only viable and reliable option for re purposing native Giga samples in a 64-bit Windows 7 environment -- is that correct?

    Thanks

    Actually, that's not exactly true.

You can install GS 4 using the following hack:

"You go to Start -> Run and enter regedit.
Then open the registry and then you as follows.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Windows
Find the entry CSDVersion and double click on it.
Change the entry of 300 to 200
    Reboot

    Install GS 4

    Reboot

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Windows
Find the entry CSDVersion and double click on it.
Change the entry of 200 to 300
    Reboot

    You're done!

The same technique works for installing other Giga stuff including any stand alone plugins using their wrapper.
