    Twelve And Then Some

Here is a link to a piece I'm working on now. I'm taking a break from working on it though I don't think it's completely finished. I plan to work more on the music as well as the sound of GPO.

    http://www.pianodocdm.com/twelve.mp3

This is based on a twelve tone "row" if you will though it isn't truly serial music. About 90% of the music came directly from the row some other material was added to complete a musical idea as needed.

It is all GPO done in Finale.

The melodic material was derived from the twelve tones of the row but altered in many ways. Most of the harmonic material also came from the row. I'll be very interested in any comments/suggestions to help me move on with this as I get back to work on it.

Instrumentation is flute, oboe english horn bassoon, 3 frenchorns, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, tuba, tympani, xylophone, snare drum, and strings.

    It's about 3 1/2 minutes long.

Assuming the link works, I hope you enjoy it.

    Thanks for listening.

    Michael:

Thanks for trying. I've checked the link and it seems to be working for me. If others have difficulty let me know so that I can explore the problem. It does take a minute to download.

I generally steer away from any kind of "serial" treatment but I have to say that I really did like this piece. Very exciting building of energy and an emotionally satisfying ending. Thank you.

I have to say that I remember doing serial music at college and I really wasn't keen! Having said that, I absolutely loved this piece! It's awesome! and what fun it must have been to write and record. GPO is sounding excellent by the way.

David, I'm not generally a great fan of serialism; but!
When you do it right and well, as you most certainly
did in this piece, it has wonderful potential.

This is a highly engaging piece of work (some of the
humor in it is superb), extremely well done, and best
of all -- highly listenable and enjoyable.

And that tail section, that ending section? Bravo!

    Excellent job on this!

    With applause,

Thanks to all of you (Louis, Kev and David) for listening.

I'm not generally a fan of serialism either - I think that it is generally too formalistic and structured (in the wrong way) for me. But I enjoyed trying it out in this piece - which I will continue to work on - and I am grateful for your thoughts. They encourage me to keep trying.

    Thanks again for your comments.
