Tchaikovsky - Symphony No. 4, Scherzo for Wind Orchestra

The Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 4 is one of his most dramatic works in my mind. The grand opening of the first movement says it all. However, the third movement, Scherzo, subtitled Pizzicato Ostinato, brings to us a wonderful light side of plucked strings mixed with interludes of woodwinds and brass.

    Here I have set the work as a transcription for wind orchestra, one requiring a high degree of precision and endurance. This rendering is produced using Finale 2006 and the GPO and JABB libraries. The instrument mix is as follows;

Piccolo, Flute 1 & 2, Oboes 1 & 2, Eb Clarinet, Bb Clarinets 1 - 3, Bass Clarinet, Bassoons, Alto Sax 1 & 2, Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax, French Horn 1-4, Trumpets 1 & 2, Tenor Trombone, Bass Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba and Timpani.

Here is my original posting to this forum of the orchestral version. Also produced using Finale 2006 and GPO/JABB.

This is one of my favorite Symphonies, and this is a very unique interpretation of what it would sound like by a wind ensemble. Very nice.

Nice work on this, Gary; and an interesting adaptation.

I'm a strong proponent of Tchaikovsky, myself, and think his
work is very badly under-represented in the repertoire.

Some of his symphonies, particulary, this one included, are
really quite excellent -- and far too little heard.

    Best,

    David.

    Keith,

I am glad that you enjoyed this transcription of this lovely work. I agree that it is one of Tchaikovsky's best works. The last movement was set for symphonic band some time ago. And I have to believe that someone would have done the same with the opening movement. The GPO/JABB libraries really gave it the realistic sound that it deserves in the wind orchestra and also orchestral versions that I posted to this forum several months ago.

Thanks for your comments. I am glad that you enjoyed it.

I agree with you his larger works are not performed enough. And bringing this movement to wind orchestra opens another area for its performance.

I enjoyed this very much. Boy howdid you ever transcibe this piece. There is so much going on. I really like the sound of the instruments and the dynamics that you used. Great job on this.

    Jay,

I first entered the full orchestral score and rendered it with GPO. Then I built the wind orchestra score and copied over the main components. And followed that with additional doubling and ensembles. The final result is what you hear.

    Thanks for listening.
