I just went to the Electonic Musician web site. I couldn't find the online article.

But it can be read on the January 2007 magazine hard copy!!

By the way, Sonar 5 also received recognition. Thought that was pretty cool too. I've had Cakewalk products on my computers for many, many years.

Again, Congratulations to the production crew of JABB!

    YEA!

Re: JABB Receives the EM's 2007 Editor's Choice Award

    Ted,

    Thanks for posting about this.

You never know what the editors are going to decide and this came as quite a surprise.

This award goes to Tom Hopkins. It was his vision and his hard work that made this library possible.

Jazz plays such an important role in music and music education. But jazz and big band had long been neglected by the sample industry and I hope this opens the doors to other jazz and big band libraries. Jazz is a very nuanced music form and a new approach was needed. It took someone like Tom, with over 35 years of Jazz performance experience, to be able to pull this off.

We are very pleased that Jazz and Big Band swept the major awards. This is our second Editor's choice award (the first was GOS which created the Sample Libraries category for the Award). Not only did it win the Electronic Musician's Editors’ Choice Award, but also the other major industry awards including the Keyboard Magazine KeyBuy Award, The Sound on Sound 5 out of 5 Stars, and the Music Tech Excellence Award. Again, all trophies for Tom.

An brief excerpt from the January issue:
Composing and arranging for jazz band just got a lot easier with the release of Garritan Jazz and Big Band library and sample player. this "band" has groove power that will lift you out of your seat, with wailing saxes, screeching trumpets and howling trombones as well as a full rhythm section that never drops a beat. Rounding out the ensembles is a vast assortment of Latin and other percussion...

Jazz and Big Band uses a "performance-driven" approach to articulation that requires you shape and sculpt the performances. A healthy dose of MIDI controller data is often needed to create convincing musical passages. But whether you're composing a smokin' swing or bop chart or arranging an ultra smooth fusion or cool score, Jazz and Big Band will be the only sample library you'll need. Here's a tap on the stand to the Garritan crew!
Congratulations are in order to Native Instruments for winning an Editor's Choice Award for Akoustic Piano (and thanks for their sample engine which powers JABB) and to VSL for winning an award for the Symphonic Cube.

Thanks to others who made this library and the award possible - Chuck Israels who gave so much input and consultation (and also played bass in the library), Gary Lindsay, Jeannot for the precise editing, the musicians who endured sore lips and fingers (and Tom again for playing the triple C on his trumpet in the library), and the beta testers who helped us refine the library. And thanks to all of you who supported this project - this award goes to you too (but Tom probably isn't going to give up the trophy).

Thumbs up Re: JABB Receives the EM's 2007 Editor's Choice Award

Congratulations to Gary, Tom and crew. A work of this magnitude has to be a group effort, but anyone that has had the joy of arranging with JABB knows what it means to work with a product of such a unique singular vision. As a Garritan customer it's easy to become complacent with the superb quality of each product they produce - so it's nice to have something like this award to remind us of what an astounding achievement JABB really is. As they said in the blurb - not only is it the defacto tool for jazz arranging, it allows musicians to convincingly run the gamut from Dixieland to fusion. You can't pull off something like this with any sample jockey off the street - it takes someone like Tom who has the experience as a pro musician along with monster technical chops and a nearly-maniacal persistance in accomplishing what no one has done before - and pitiful few have attempted since. So again - congrats to Tom and everyone else at Garritan. The award is well-deserved.
