Re: Another new track. Finished tonight.

I dig it... I'm a big fan of Nils Petter Molvaer/Toshinori Kondo/Ben Neill, and you're definitely hitting a similar vibe...

Two tiny observations, if I may:

    (1) the trumpet itself is a bit... what's the word... 'brash'... I think it's a bit too trebly. I'm listening to the track through my studio monitors, so I don't think that it's just a tinny-computer-speaker thing. Playing against a laid-back groove like that, I think that the horn should be a little less shrill. It feels like something you could do easily with a little EQing, boosting a few choice low-to-mid freqs.

    (2) this is purely a matter of personal preference, so take it with a heaping dollop of salt... I'd love to hear some fuller reverb on both the horn and the strings that pop up throughout the middle of the piece. The delay on the horn is nice, but it still strikes me as a little out of place against the relatively dreamy backdrop. It doesn't sound 'live' enough to my ears...

Cool piece... hope my thoughts are in-any-way helpful!!

    Hi Alan,

Thank you for yoour feedback, the trumpet is that bright due to the fact that I used the Muted Trumpet EQ in Logis Channel EQ.

I will tone it down a bit tomorrow and see how that works.

    Regards and thanks

Re: Another new track. Finished tonight.

too much delay. it doesn't work for me on the epiano. i'd like the structure tightened up a bit. when the strings come in (lovely by the way, both the sound and the riff) it seems like I don't know where we are structurally. happens again throughout the piece.

In other words, i really like this and think the bass line kicks, the overall vibe is great, and you have very good instincts. As a background mix, this is fantastic. It could also turn into more of a pop song if you "tightened up the structure" as I said.

if i had an ipod, i'd upload this and happily put it in my dinner music mix!

    Thanks Metrobot,

I will change the delay for reverb and see how that works. What else do you mean by tightening the structure? please give more detail.

    Thanks

Re: Another new track. Finished tonight.

Ok after a fiddle this morning. I have changed the Trumept delay for reverb and added a little to the strings.
The Epiano is not delay but a reverb it is called Piano Reflection in Logics space designer.

Any thing else I need to look at?

It has also moved so it has a new link too.

Re: Another new track. Finished tonight.

Simon, the epiano sounds better. (for my own credibility, i hope that's something you changed!) The reverb on the trumpet sounds good too. Not sure which i like best on the trumpet, the delay or reverb. Ultimately, you'll just have to listen to your gut and go with what you think is best. Until someone comes along with a budget. Then their opinion gets extra attention!

As to the structure, listening to it again, i think it mostly works as is. But this would be more like the "extended mix." If you had a reason to, you may want to come up with a shorter version in the 3 minutes range, thinking in terms of song structure. But that is clearly just my approach, which may not be what you are going for.

    keep it up!

Re: Another new track. Finished tonight.

    Metrobot,

Thank you for your help in improving this piece, I think the delay on the Trumpet was awrong choice, and a shorter one would work, but I changed it to reverb and made it less bright too and this seems to be nicer on the ears.

    Many thanks

Re: Another new track. Finished tonight.

After some pointers given helpfully and on another forum I have made some changes to this track.
I had put the drums at the second transition on a different beat to the first one, and this put a strange timing issue with the Strings.

I also remove one guitar phrase and moved the Sax line to give a different break.

Hopefully I have nailed it but if anyone hears something that is not right please let me know.

For the time being both versions are on my website.

    New version is.
