Elgar Performed by Joaz with the Gofriller Cello - Take 2 with Animated Score

A couple of months ago Joaz posted the opening of the Elgar Cello Concerto as played by the first beta of the Gofriller Solo Cello.

We received a great deal of feedback which has helped refine the instrument. Giorgio has added five new body impulses for a warmer tone. Giorgio also added new programming features including sul altra corda, more bow noise control, bichord portamento, live vibrato rate (with pseudo- random modulation), con sordino, natural & artificial harmonics, additional attacks and improved portamento. Timbrical inhomogeneities have also been improved. Joaz chose an impulse that he felt came the closest to delivering a "woody" sound as represented by Jacqueline du Pré. Here is the new demo:

This Cello Concerto by Elgar is unique. Elgar begins with several stopped chords with the cello that seems to place the listener in the middle of things to set up a disoriented and sombre mood. That's not the way concertos were supposed to begin as they generally have started with an orchestral introduction followed by the solo instrument making a carefully planned entrance. Elgar wrote this concerto months after the end of the First World War, and this melody reflects Elgar's lament for the millions of lives the war had cost.

Sean has taken the new mp3 and synced it to the score, so that the music follows the score. Here is the animated score:

Bravo Joe, you keep outdoing yourself! Thanks for this most excellent rendition of this famous work by Elgar. Thanks to Lukpcn for doing the score and and very many thanks to Sean for making this demo come alive on the staff. And thanks Giorgio for the countless hours of work to do make this instrument be truly virtuosic.

    Enjoy!

Simply amazing!!! Very nice Joe. I think someone needs to do Don Quixote by Richard Strauss. That's another great Cello Concerto.

Holy smoke! I just about jumped out of my chair at those opening chords. Felt like I was inside the cello. Truly incredible instrument and artistic rendition.

Great job Sean with the score too--that was very enlightening!

This score and sound thing has great educational and commercial potential. You could sell CDs or web downloads of complete concertos, symphonies, etc. that schools and students would just eat up!
