Gunno Södersten - Organ Symphony mvt 1 "Immanuel"

Gunno Södersten (1920-1998) was a Swedish composer/organist. He wrote quite a bit of music, much of which has never been recorded. As part of the research for my book on the solo organ Symphony, I managed to track down copies of ALL 6 of his Organ Symphonies.

Here is Mvt 1 of Symphony 1 "Immanuel"

    http://orwig.blackiris.com/sodersten...1_Immanuel.mp3

Organ samples: Grygar organ, Litomysl, Czech Republic - sampled by Jiri Zurek for Hauptwerk 2
Handbell samples: GPO (the organ where Södersten was organist had a stop that played bells!)

    Enjoy!

First-rate job on this, Jonathan; especially appreciated
some of the voicing and stop choices (love the samples).

An intriguing work... echoes of Melchers, Messiaen; and
    almost preludial in feel.

I'd be most interested to hear the remaining movements.

    Best,

    Thanks, David!

Södersten was a fan of Messiaen (IIRC he did the Swedish premiere of some of Messiaen's organ works) so that is a good call on your part.

This is very "preludial" as you say - it is mvt 1 of 3 total for this piece, so you will indeed hear more. Fortuantely the remaining 2 mvts also call for the bell stop, so I can still post it here if I use GPO

The other 5 symphonies are a wealth of music also - Södersten mixed a wide range of techniques to forge a very personal style. For example, Sym. 5 has everything from organum to chord clusters and such weird effects as turning off the blower while holding down a chord(!). It all works, and I'm glad to bring this music to a wider audience.

    Jonathan,

Interesting music and fine rendering on your part. THe handbells are a really neat touch to it.

    Thanks, Gary!

The handbells aren't EXACTLY the same as what is on the organ at Södersten's church, but they come pretty close.

I'm looking forward to finishing the 2nd and 3rd mvts as well.

    very nice sample Jon,
    nice programming too!
Not my cup of tea as far as the piece goes, but I can still appreciate a good job when I hear it.
    Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the compliment - I have really felt that my virtual music-making has gotten better in the last few months...

(problem with that is, that I now have to go back and re-do a buch of stuff, since my ear has gotten FAR more critical!)

    Jonathan,
You know what an organ junkie I am. I loved this. The samples are spactacular! Care to share what reverb you use? Thanks for posting.

Never look at the trombones. It only encourages them. Richard Strauss

    Glad you liked it!

No reverb added... those are the acoustics included with the samples from the reverb in the building(!)

Keep your peekers peeled - I hope to do more mvts soon....
