Topic: Is this sax real?

    Is this sax real?

Chris Hein states that this sax sample is real and from his library. It's the solo sax and trumpet that confuses me. The charts sax and trumpets DO sound sampled but the sax solo, in particular, sounds like Michael Brecker and far from anything I've heard from CH Horns. Anyone else have opinions? Chris Hein-"I found this in another forum":

BTW- The "forum"is a commericial recording studio as far as I can tell.

The tenor solo and trumpet are real players - good ones too. It is probable that they are sampled phrases strung together, as Lee suggests. I'm not familiar with Chris Hein's library to know if these sampled phrases are included with his library. Does Chris or someone who owns his library want to enlighten us?

Re: Is this sax real? BUSTED!

There is no info on CH website to suggest there are sampled phrases. In the announcement of his guitars he suggests that these horns are samples and a part of his library. The next response reacts to that as well.

Very lame and it chaps my butt that CH would suggest these are samples. While I'm intrigued w/ his guitars, for now, I will pass as a protest to false advertising. He knows what he wrote and how it would be understood. Lame- like his sax samples. And I'm being nice BTW

Jim Clark- nice site. I've bookmarked it and would sometime love to take advantage of your service.

Why are you using this as a Chris Hein example? It's not from his site and I can't find any reference to his horns in relationship to it.
The demos on Chris' site all sound like his library. Maybe you can post a link to what you mean.

    Re: Is this sax real?

Okay, some explanations seem to be in order. First, the original thread is at the following url. Chris does seem to indicate that the solos are from his library:

    http://northernsounds.com/forum/showthread.php?t=48507

Second, Artsoundz I think it's a bit premature to be getting too bent out of shape about this. (I'm glad that you removed the sentence calling for a boycott from your statement.) I can think of a number of possible reasons that Chris may have stated that those solos are played by his library:

    1. Those may in fact be sampled phrases from his library. The "out" nature of both of those solos would make them convenient riffs to use in this context.

    2. It's possible that Chris was mislead by the person who created the audio file, or he may have simply misunderstood.

    3. Since I don't have his brass library, I don't know for sure; maybe his library is that good.

    4. Maybe he was just having a little fun; testing us, to see what kind of responses he would get.

Let's wait for a response from Chris before getting carried away. He's always seemed like a respectful, level-headed guy here at NS, and see no reason to call for the virtual stockade.

    Re: Is this sax real?

My response was reasonable and I did not call for a boycott.Where in the world did you see this? I never said it-therefore I never "removed" it. I simply, for now, will not buy his stuff. Just me.again-JUST ME. But I must admit there is a strong possibility I will forgive Chris and buy his library.

It's rather clear to me that the statement was misleading. Having fun? uh...where is the funny? If he responded to the confused fellow in a timely matter-well ok- I could see the funny.barely.

I'm not bent out of shape and truly lost no sleep- just calling the guy on his statement. Also, CH does seem to be a decent chap but his take on the samples of his sax library being so wonderful put him in the hot box and with this misleading statement- well that's too much. I stand by my statements. CH was clearly misleading. Dig? hugs?

    Re: Is this sax real?

Sorry, but we'll have to agree to disagree. The internet isn't a place you go to pick a fight with the first person that makes a mistake. Give Chris a chance to respond. The fact that he hasn't responded just means that either he's not been online (it is the weekend, you know), or is checking his facts before responding. If it turns out that Chris was pulling a fast one (which I doubt), I'll then make a judgement.

    Re: Is this sax real?

you seem to be picking a fight. It's Just BIZ!!! None of your responses make sense-Ch misunderstood and thought that was from his library? oh, puhleeze!. He has intimate knowledge and has been thouroughly chastised in the past for an unbelievable library.Where have you been? There was a major thread about this library a while back that dealt with the fact his demos dont sound good much less the samples. Did you listen to his demos? AND there is no indication that there are included sample phrases. I've spent TIME looking and LISTENING. Did youlook and listen or did you just respond in a knee jerk way?

But dude. let's stop. I'm not here to kick CH. He made an error and I caught it. I wasn't unreasonable -I didnt call for a boycott(you've yet to explain that) I do have a desire to trounce that awfull library and those sad demos. ANY chance I get. LOVE his guitar library. Not the greatest Guitar demos, though.I think those are constructive criticisms that shouldn't be taken personally. JUST BIZ. luv ya. P.S. The nature of sax sampling prevents CH from making a great sax library-imho. Not his fault and frankly, I think it was brave.

    Re: Is this sax real?

artsoundz, let me remind you that we haven't heard from CH yet, so I wouldn't jump into conclusions.

That said, I have worked a bit with CH Sax, and it does sound pretty good. There are no sampled phrases in the library, but with some clever custom programming it can come close. However, his sax straight out of the box with the horrible NI player app will NEVER be able to achieve this kind of realism as in that MP3 file. For a studio it's easier to hire a live player for this type of work though, considering the sound/performance quality, and in this case it does sound like a real sax (and trumpet) to my ears.

    Re: Is this sax real?

fair enough. Chris, was obviously just having fun with us and his library of saxes make the need for a real player redundant. I believe that this library is the single most important piece of software to have ever come out of the industry. This recent thread has opened my eyes and has changed my life both spiritually and professionally. I have called my sax buddys and have ended our professional relationship. They all agreed that the writing was on the wall for a long time and have passed on kudos and Bravo's! to me for making a painful but much needed stand.

To that end, I've purchased a small drumset and will be performing "The Chris Hein Sax Way of Good Living and Wealth" seminars on street corners throughout Bakersfield, Pocatello, and other major music centers. Space is filling up fast so pr-reserve your spot before it get's REALLY crazy.Thank you.
