OT: Cubase 4 has dropped support for DirectX plug-ins

Apologies if this way off topic ... but since a few people have posted about how nice Sonar 6 is, I thought it just as valid to raise what might be an important issue for Cubase users wishing to upgrade to Cubase 4, especially if use a lot of DirectX plug-ins.

Steinberg have dropped support for DX. There is a bit of a bru-hah-hah erupting over at cubase.net, since Steinberg have only got round to mentioning it in the 4.0.1 release notes.

Their only response so far seems to be "well, buy the VST versions".

Well I don't understand all this fuzz???

Just use a wrapper and you can use all the DX Plugs you like.

Here you can find 2 free ones:

I would be curious what plugs you use that are only available in DX format?

This day and age it's probably not so much of an issue of DX-only (though there probably are some good old ones about), but more imporantly some vendors plugs work better as VST than DX, or vice versa. Here's a quote from one chap that should illustrates why something that appears obvious on the surface (i.e., VST is the de facto standard, DX is obsolete) involves some wrinkles when you start peeling back the layers:

As well as inline plugs... Autotune workflow as been fvcked up. Autotune VST doesn't work in offline processing, where most people use AT. And even if it did it has an awful 5 second load due to the I-lok. Autotune DX works ( worked ) perfectly.

Those same types of differences exist for many major vendors...
