    Andante Cantabile

    A transcription for small wind ensemble of Mozart's JUPITER
    Symphyony. Final movement

    Gary,

    Another nice transcription. A couple of observations. I think that the solo instruments at the beginning are lost as the orchestra enters and covers them. Also, some of the dynamic transitions are rather abrupt, could crescendo into them to slightly would help some. It is not as smooth and natural as the Minuetto came across. But there are some very nice moments as well.

    Likewise as with the other Jupiter transcription, well
    thought out, and well executed, Gary.

    I'd go with Gary B. on giving a bit more attention to
    dynamic relationships and balances amongst the
    instruments in places -- tricky, I know, in the
    rendering, sometimes -- but on the overall, a fine
    rendition and astute transcription.

    Thanks Gary & David,
    As I began this movement I was bothered by the opening balance, but it is exactly the way Mozart wrote it.
    I pondered about either using slurs or phrasing marks to change
    the sound. I guess the easiest way is to use softer dynamics in
    the "offending" parts.

    What I have found helps make the dynamic changes a little less bumpy if to use a short cresc. or dim. hairpin to make the transition less of a sharp step. There are some pieces that go from p to fff and it just sounds terrible if it is left to chance. Anyhow, it is something to consider and play with.

    As for how Mozart wrote it, the instruments may have a particular dynamic marking in the score, but in a live performance the group will be properly balanced (hopefully) by the conductor and the good ear of the musicians taking into consideration the instuments, the acoustics of the hall, etc. Solo instruments should not be lost against the power of the rest of the group. So one must be careful about accepting too literally the dynamic parkings in a score against the real world performing media.

    GaryBric has given some great advice, but you still have some fine work here! I love the Jupiter symphony of course, so it was quite refreshing to hear a wind ensemble transcription, nicely done!

    Gary,
    Very nice work on this. The above advise on dynamics is solid advise. Rendering samples is no different than live performance. Conducters and performers introduce unwritten dynamics by way of interpretation. Thanks for posting.
