    Bach - Fugue 2 - Well Tempered Clavier

    Contained in one of Bach's harpichord study collection, "The Well Tempered Clavier", Fugue 2 stands out as one of his best known small works for keyboard.

    Here I have set it for two different brass ensembles at Eastman;

    Brass Choir (2T,2H,2T,1T)

    Trombones Quintet (3T, 2B)

    They were produced using Finale 2006 and GPO.

    Very cool! I really like that Fugue. I have never heard it set to brass like that, but it sounded great! I especially liked the first one.

    Thanks for your comments. This three part fugue is much trickier to arrange than it seems to be at first glance. Part of the problem is that the voices have a large range so they must be carefully partitioned to keep them in good playing range of each given instrument. The second problem is that the voices never really break off long enough for the musician to rest. So there is some sharing across voices to make it more accessible to a larger set of performing groups.

    I am glad that you enjoyed it. I did too when I arranged it.

    Nice job on these, as always, Gary.

    I must admit I am quite partial to the trombone quintet.
    My initial thought was that that would "mud down" on
    you -- but I'm happily dead wrong about that: clear,
    sharp, well-defined. Very astute transcription!

    Thanks for your comments David. I have heard this one live and it gives the players a real workout. Even considering that it splits up the work. And you are also correct in that it does speak clearly throughout.
