Thumbs up Organ and orchestra - Karg-Elert Redux

    Hello folks,

I'm finally getting back to doing some more music now that vacation is over.

Some time ago, I posted my arrangement of an Harmonium piece by Sigfrid Karg-Elert for organ and orchestra....

I was never fully satisfied with it - I'm rather picky about the organ sound, and while the GPO organ is far better than most organs included in orchestral sample sets, I have been spoiled by the Hauptwerk sample program for organ sounds...

Up until now, it has been VERY difficult for me to synchronize Finale 2006 playing GPO with a midi file playing Haupwerk - my PC was FAR too puny to attempt to play Hauptwerk while also running Finale 2006 (and GPO and HW could not simultaneously be used due to the nature of Finale's MIDI implementation)

Now that I have a dedicated PC for Hauptwerk, I simply muted the orchestral tracks after recording sans organ, switched my MIDI outputs to go to the remote machine instead of GPO, recorded the organ and reassembled the files in my trusty DAW.

I tried a little trick to make the space larger by applying 2 different impulses - a 125-foot distance from the organ, a 115-foot distance from the orchestra (thanks for the tip, DPDan)

    Here it is:

If you want to hear the previous version, it's still HERE

    Enjoy!

    Thanks, Jun

The music I cannot take credit for, only the orchestration . It is easy to make a beautiful arrangement/orchestration when starting with good material.

    Best wishes,

    Jonathan:

Ditto on Yun's remarks and also on the use of the GPO organ. Your orchestra and organ sound remarkably "real."

Enjoyed this very much. Saving it for Organ and Orchestra demo for friends.

    Wow! Bravo!

    This is stunningly good, Jonathan.

    One of the best renderings I've heard;
the organ samples are superb, and the
overall mix and orchestral work, excellent.

    Thanks jack,

Note that on this version I'm
not using GPO for the organ sounds (the major difference between this and the previous incarnation).

Now, I need to spend some time tweaking and finishing my Organ Concerto using the same method

    Thanks, David!

I'm continuing to learn how to make stuff like this better - it would seem that Finale Human Playback can be VERY good, but when going the extra mile and doing further tweakage in a DAW the results go up a notch... Thanks to all of the tips I've received from fellow forum members, I continue to make progress in this area

    Johnathon,

Excellent rendering of this mighty work. It was very interesting to listen to the before and after versions. You great efforts really paid off in the level of improvement!!
