'Chat' is banned, today we will have a "Short Talk" instead

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has ordered government and cultural bodies to use modified Persian words to replace foreign words that have crept into the language.

The word "chat" has officially been replaced with "short talk".

Some of you enjoy Friday chat with "pizza", but that word has been changed to "elastic loaves". That government has introduced more than 2,000 words as alternatives for some of the foreign words that have become commonly used in Iran.

So see you at "Short Talk".

France has l'academie francaise, whose mission is to oversee, protect and maintain the purity of the French language. There, for example, the word 'computer' is banned. Everyone knows it's supposed to be 'ordinateur'.

I should probably stop there, because my mother taught me that if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

I actually see nothing wrong with using the proper words that are available in your language to describe things. The French have the annoying habit of adapting tonnes of English words and saying "they're French":
    le shopping
    le jogging
    le parking
(computer was a new one to me)
    le sweatshirt!

I see no reason not to insist on proper linguistic usage... le magazinage, la course à pieds, le stationnement, le chandail en cotton ouaité...

I think it bothers me almost as much as seeing "thru", "nite" and their ilk.

In Québec we also have a governmental agency that oversees linguistic usage. Of course, we live in a very different reality than the French who are just obsessively anglophilic - Québec is surrounded by a sea of English.

This may sound strange to Americans, but I say "bravo" to the Iranian government for protecting its culture - and that is probably the ONLY time you will ever hear me say "bravo" to Iran!

And they would want 'bravo' changed to the Persian for 'very good...'
