    Billy Joel???

    Hi Folks:

I started work on this years ago. and it kinda makes me wonder if I ever finish anything.

I've finally decided to post a preliminary result. It's an arrangement that I created for brass quintet of one of my favorite pieces by Billy Joel - Longest Time. I started from the melody by ear, and went from there.

    It's pure GPO.

    Hello,

Nice work! If I can just make two suggestions:

The tuba on the chorus (wooo.oo.oo.oo, for the longest time seems weird - perhaps you could move that line in another instrument and rework the bass yourself (I can't remember how the original sounds in that part)?

Also, have you thought about playing the shorter notes staccato?

    Cheers Matt

    Nice job on this, Steve!

Enjoyed listening -- moreover, I think Billy Joel himself
would appreciate this well done arrangement.

    Best,

    Steve,

I likes the original version and I think that this is a really nice setting of the Joel work.

I do tend to agree with Matt that the Tuba tends to hang out there a bit too pronounced. I think that part of the problem is that the bass line sounds two octaves lower that the next harmoney instrument, primarily the F. Horn. And that is probably how it comes out on the score. So I would experiment with either moving the bass up an octave or try it there with a tenor trombone (even doubling the bass) so that there is not this huge tonal gap. This is only an idea to try.

    Keep them coming.

    Thumbs up Re: Billy Joel???

Isn't this, "Her Longest Whine"? Just kidding.
Nice job. Not much of a brass quintet person however this was quite entertaining! Personally, I find it fine just the way it is. Nice.

    Hello again,

maybe I didn't make enough sense ... darn this foreign language ... the tuba sounds fine to me except in the chorus where it sounds harmonically wrong. I'd move the tuba part in the chorus an octave higher and make another instrument play it and change the tuba's part to support the harmony.

Sing us a song, you're the brass quintet man..

    Re: Billy Joel???

I was a great Billy Joel fan, bought all his music, went to his concerts. Now i remember well why i became a Billy Joel fan... it was this song! Very nice work, Steve, it's beautiful, this is definitely a saver, thanks for posting it. I have to go the record store now I just remembered something.

PS: this coulda been entered in the Fourth of July music contest, Billy is as American as applepie.

    "Oh, Oh, Oh
    For the longest time
    Oh, Oh, Oh
    For the longest time

If you said goodbye to me tonight
There would still be music left to write
What else could I do, I'm so inspired by you
That hasn't happened for the longest time

Once I thought my innocence was gone
Now I know that happiness goes on
That's when you found me, when you put your arms around me
I haven't been there for the longest time

    Oh, Oh, Oh
    For the longest time
    Oh, Oh, Oh
    For the longest time

I'm that voice you're hearing in the hall
And the greatest miracle of all
Is how I need you, and how you needed me too
That hasn't happened in the longest time

Maybe this won't last very long
    But you feel so right
    And I could be wrong
    Maybe I've gone this far
And it's more than I'd hoped for

Who knows how much further we'll go on
Maybe I'll be sorry when you're gone
I'll take my chances, I forgot how nice romance is
I haven't been there for the longest time

I had second thoughts at the start
I said to myself, hold on to your heart
Now I know the woman that you are
    It's wonderful so far
And you're more than I'd hoped for

I don't care what consequence it brings
I have been a fool for lesser things
I want you so bad, I think you ought to know that
I intend to hold you for the longest time"
