floating through clouds - my first GPO MP3

having recently acquired this software I've been busy turning sour sounding MIDIs into beautiful GPO files - I'm so impressed with how user friendly & out of the box GPO really is!

Anyway this is a short & simple little piece for strings, celeste, harp & brass ... I would describe it as moving from cheery, to melancholy, to brooding, to sad & finally triumphant!

Being my first attempt there are bound to be teething problems, not to mention I'm pretty new to the world of orchestration (not to mention I don't use standard notation, erk)

any comments/feedback would be greatly appreciated!

ps - I hope I have posted up the right MP3!

yuck - poor grammar to haha

On repeated listens I think the mix is a bit bass heavy which I may have to sort out

    Welcome aboard, Thomas!

And a fine first showing with Floating On Clouds!

A lovely, straightforward piece, well written, and a pleasure
to listen to. I've listened through this several times, and
I enjoyed the clear, moving melodic work and ethereal feel
    of the piece.

May I suggest you back off the reverb somewhat, however.
(Most of us do the same thing on a first piece -- you should
have heard mine...lol.) This will bring out the lines far more
    clearly.

This is good work, Thomas, and I look forward to hearing
    much more from you!

    My best regards,

cheers for the comments! I must admit over my time hear listening to all the work posted has made me apprehensive to post my comparably simple stuff.

& thanks for the advice on reverb - you should have heard it with wet instruments initially! haha... I'm just using a default reverb program with our sound software... but I agree: the reverb makes it a bit... washed out?

Perhaps I can try a different setting to auditorium

    cheers again!

Yes, quite correct -- too much reverb, and you lose articulations,
blur the overall sound. Very, very much true: less is more in this
    case.

I'm not sure what reverb you're using, but in general, the way
I do it... I start with just the "dry" signal and gradually add
the "wet". When it sounds like it's just right? I back off the
wet slightly, and usually that's about right.

Of course, depending on the tool you use for reverb, there can
be a number of adjustments -- but first and most important
is not to use so much that you bury the original sound.

    Hope that helps a little!

    Best,

This was a nice arrangement, Thomas!

Very melodic...which echoes a bit of Elfman at times yet not too noticeable.

I agree with David on the Reverb comments. A touch less on your main voices will bring the instruments into clarity.

nice work.. and welcome to the forum!

cheers for the comments, & glad you noticed the elfman parallels... I thought I may have flirted with taking my influence to far

I may post some more MP3's later ... I find it amazing how creative alot of you are with chord structure & moving a piece foward, imo as a writer thats my biggest weakness atm

    Thomas,

Very nice effort and outcome with Clouds. I agree with the others, a touch less reverb will increase clarity. But you have done a very nice job and the outcome with GPO is excellent.
