best method for wide dynamic changes

What is the best method for making general changes in dynamics? I have been setting the main volume level (CC 7) at the beginning of a string quartet peice for all instruments, then varying the individual expressive volume with the mod controller. But in a case where the group dynamic is very wide would it be best to use CC 7 for this type of change?

I'd be interested to hear what others are doing.

    Best,
    Rick

No, because CC#1 (modwheel) also changes the timbre (like a physical instrument), which CC#7 doesn't.

For GPO CC#1 should carry you from pp to fff. The only time you might possibly need to control volume is to get something even softer. CC#1 will not get you to zero (in JABB it will, however).

I actually find that I use mostly the bottom half of the CC#1 range, only going above for very loud passages.
