'Spirit of the Past' by Rich Rayer

Rich Rayer has just sent in his new work 'Spirit of the Past'.

It is based roughly around a traditional Omaha Indian song called the "Omaha Song". It is written as a Symphonic Wind Ensemble.

This is a very interesting work and thought the Native American spirit was captured quite well.

Thanks for sharing this with us.

    Nicely done, Rich!

Quite evocative of the subject material, surely; and
solid technical writing for wind ensemble.

    I enjoyed listening.

    Nice Work, Rich!

The opening sequence is especially good!. Your overall theme definitely captures the vastness of wilderness, and it's people long ago.

I'm reminded of John Barry (Dances with Wolves)..

    Nicely done!..

Thanks etLux (David) your comments are always appreciated. This piece has been in the making since January. I'm still struggling with its entire presentation.

I have been asked to get it score read (with parts) so that a local honors group can perform it. I hope I can have it ready for this fall and possibly have it performed in concert during their next season.

Thanks again for the appreciated comments. Coming from you it is always respected and heartfelt.

You are very kind. I haven't even listen to that score in years. I was moved by the Indian flute playing of R. Carlos Nakai. It was from a songbook of his that I got the inspiration.

Thanks for your kind remarks. They are certainly appreciated.

Great! I think this work will "perform well", Rich. Though
the rendering was good work on this -- there's something
about a wind ensemble configuration that it never quite
has the sweetness and life in electronic mediums (even
recordings of live groups) that it does in a real hall.

    Good luck with the performance!

    Rich,

I enjoyed listening to your piece. It sounds like this would work quite well on a high school symphonic band level. I thought you did a really nice job varying modalities and and maintaining the idiomatic rhythmic and melodic style. Looking forward to your next one!

    Thanks Danny,

is greatly appreciated. I did try to work hard at varying the modalities for audience interest. It is truly hard to keep a listener involved with a piece, especially when it's based on a simple, though elegant American Indian melody and characteristic rhythm that is associated with it.

This piece was written with High School Bands in mind as I am a former High School Band Director (now retired).

    Thanks again for the comments.

Hi, just wanted to throw my 2 cents in... I really enjoyed listening to this piece. Something very different about it... very spiritual. Liked the use of Bass Drum, snare, and cymbals... Good job.... Hope the performance is a success.

Thanks Michael, I really appreciated your comments. Now, my summer will be busy going over the parts and making sure they are all clean and in playing order!
