4 Neat Things About Your Hometown

I recently visited a new blog at Neatorama which lists: 4 Neat Things About My Los Angeles. I thought it would nice to find out about where you live.

I'll start it off with my hometown: Orcas Island:
    1. You need to take a ferry or a float plane (or kayak) to get here.
    2. More wildlife than people: Orca whales, eagles, lambs, llamas, cows and goats.
    3. Incredible views: mountains (Cascades, Olympics, Whistler), waterways, islands
    4. No traffic jams (except bicyclists and lamb crossings).

    Tyler, Texas:

    1. Largest municipal rose garden in the world. (It is breathtakingly beautiful during the blooming season.)

    2. Home of the East Texas Symphony Orchestra

    3. One of the major medical centers of the universe. (Three world-class hospitals and almost six-hundred practicing physicians.)

    4. A clean, well-laid-out, progressive city of over 100,000 good people.

(There is much, much more but I am restricted to just four.)

Well I live in Meriden, UK:

    1. Meriden is at the very centre of England, and a 500-year-old sandstone pillar-shaped monument to that effect stands in the village green. This medieval village cross is a listed artifact.

    2. There are stunning views wherever you go in Meriden - many are the classic "chocolate box" type image that non-Brits associate with England. Views.

    3. It's a 10 minute drive to Birmingham International where I can get on a plane or train to virtually anywhere in the World.

    4. Meriden is also home to a memorial to all the cyclists who died in the First World War. An annual event, at which thousands of cyclists pay their respects to their fallen colleagues and commemorate these deaths, is held in the village. The memorial was unveiled on 21 May1921, in the presence of over 20,000 cyclists.

    Baltimore, Maryland

    1. Lots of brewpubs for the beer conoisseur (snob) like me

    2. Eccentric working class city -- plenty of culture but no "sophisticated" people to be pretentious about it

    3. The Peabody Conservatory

    4. Edgar Allen Poe's hometown

(4.5 if it comes true: Lots of new orchestral music was recorded by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra during David Zinman's days. Hopefully this will start up again when Marin Alsop takes over. )

    Midland, TX

    1) Never had to fight a throng of tourists while growing up

    2) No trees or hills to get in the way of the scenery

    3) Never had to worry about drowning due to any natural disaster involving water (a personal fear of mine)

    4) Can get into the Whitehouse any time I want just because I'm from Midland (OK, haven't tried it yet, but I just know it's true!)

The four best things of my area (Center-East Italy, and my town - Recanati - in particular) might be these ones:

    1. A beautiful mix of nature and perfectly restored ancient towns.
    2. Not far from a major train station, harbour and airport.
    3. Lot of active theatres all the year long, with each plaza and castle transformed in a stage or concert hall during summer.
    4. Very low crime rate, so you can go around with confidence at any time.

Chandler, AZ - Suburb of Phoenix.

    1. One of the fastest growing communities for the past 5 years in the United States (it has been in the top 10 cities and was the fastest growing a few years ago).

    2. Is known as the Silicon Desert as we have many high tech companies including 2 Intel campuses with 3 Fabrication facilities that employ about 10,000. We also have many other high tech companies including Orbital Sciences which has the Pegasus & Minotaur rockets plus makes many other space related products.

    3. We have many festivals throughout the year including the Chandler Jazz Festival, Ostrich Festival, Hot Air Balloon Festival and many more.

    4. A plethora of museums and parks. Some of the museums include the Arizona Railway Museum, Chandler Historical Museum, Chanlder Center for the Arts and Vision Gallery. Parks include a few aquatic parks with olympic size pools, lazy rivers and water slides, a few large parks where the festivals are at, bark parks (for dogs), bike grind park, skate park plus many smaller city parks.
