Question XP CPU recommendation for orch lib playback

    Hi everyone.
Hope this is the correct place to ask.

My studio is primarily Mac-based with one XP P4 delegated to some specific apps. I'd like to add an XP PC dedicated to Kontakt2 and KHSO Emerald.

What are some recommendations for orch lib playback in this case: building or buying a stock PC?

If a stock PC is an ok way to go are there any current brands/ configurations to consider over others?

If buying a custom PC for this use only what are some recommended resources?

    Input much appreciated!

Building a PC from parts - www.newegg.com is where I get my stuff - is probably your best route.

For the above stuff, it really depends on your budget, but here's what I'd do.

    P4 or Athlon 64 processor
    2GB RAM
1 IDE HD for the OS/Applications
2 SATA HD setup in a RAID for samples
Good quality sound card to send the audio to your Mac, etc.

Mike is a good guy, makes a reasonably priced computer....You can add things to the base price to make the computer that you want at a reasonable price .
Tell him Jim from NY sent you .....Good Luck .....Jim

Thank you both (Symbiotic and synthnut/Jim) for your replies - exactly what I was looking for! I'll explore both routes. BTW, I have a MOTU 2408 PCI system (and a separate MIDI interface) for streaming audio back to the Mac via lightpipe. Should be ok, correct?

Regarding budget, what price range should I expect to pay to build a similar core system (CPU, RAM and drives)?

Any factors to decide between the P4 or Athlon64?

Jim, did you have Mike build you a PC and if so what did you get, how long did it take and how much did it cost (if you're comfortable sharing).

    Thanks again guys.

    google "digital audio workstation"
    or other such search.

there are serveral "pro" daw builders who specialize in "Sample boxes"
who can support both software and hardware.

More cost effective too. You are also not so willing to shoot the support guy.
