    A REQUEST FOR DEVELOPERS

I own products from about half of the developers who have advertised on
this forum and about half of that half email me when a new product is
offered, a sale is happening or an update is up on their site. Some just
offer a link to NS where their promation is taking place, which is fine,
and some provide a link to their site. BUT, some seem to think that all
their customers check NS everyday and will be aware of group buys, new
products, updates and promotions just from reading NS. Recently I was
surprised when a developer had released new titles, had prerelease sales etc, but had failed to notify their customers via email.

When a company, that I have never done business with, leaks info on an
upcoming product that I would be interested in, I usually request that I
be put on their email list so that I can be made aware of release dates
and such. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't, but I have managed to miss some great buying opportunities from companies whose products look to be interesting or that I like doing business with, because I
just didn't know. A recent sale went by, and even though the delveloper said he would keep me updated, he didn't and I missed it.

I spend 60 hours a week gawking at a computer screens, writing music in
a boiler room atmosphere at work, and have no desire to turn on a computer and search through forums to hunt for information from companies I like buying products from. This place is a great read, when time permits, but that's not often.

So please, let your customer base and people who have asked to be
informed about your products, know what's going on with your development
and marketing so we can do business with you.

I want to applaud those developers who painstakingly maintain up to date
customer databases and take the extra effort to keep their customers
    informed.

I don't want to mention the names of the companies who I wish would do
this, but you know who you are.

    Re: A REQUEST FOR DEVELOPERS

    Netherwood,

Thanks for letting us developers know how you feel. We had a discussion on the GPO forum about this issue. Most wanted to be informed and some did not want to be spammed. We have avoided emailing and sent only one email announcement (a newsletter a few months ago).

Sometimes a true sale is a limited event or a target audience. For instance the GOS clearance sale was only for Northern Sounds members. We had a very limited suppy of remaining inventory and wanted it to be available to only active Northern Sounds members. Other times we would want a more general announcement and a newsletter may be appropriate.

I had felt that developers contantly emailing customers is tantamount to spam. I get many emails from certain developer(s) who perpetually has a sale. It is an annoyance to get hawking emails whether its from sample develpers or viagra hucksters.

If you get email letters from every developer it could add to the already growing mountain of spam many of us experience.

I would be interested to know how others feel about getting newletters and announcements from developers. I try to avoid it but maybe many find the information useful. Is it the frequency or the act itself? Would getting one mailing every few months be okay? Is once a month too much? Is any email an annoyance? Or do you find the information valuable?

    Re: A REQUEST FOR DEVELOPERS

I like to receive an e-mail to my non work e-mail every time there's any sort of sale or significant improvement in the apps.

I'm not interested in a general nonsense letter about your vacations or how your kids are doing in school.

Although, if you've got a hot new girlfriend do send nude pix! Turns out that is something I'm willing to accept......

I'd like email notification of special sales or new products, but not if the developer in question is just sending out periodic advertisments with no real news to speak of.

    I second that, Journeyman.

I'm responsive to these kinds of emails. Just bought a program last night from an email solicitation.

But please!...avoid "two inches longer" in the subject line!

Our method is very simple. If you are a registered user and have joined our user forum, you will get an email. If you did not join the forum, you won't. Our forum allows us to email all with one click. Everything we announce gets posted at NSS, KvR, our user forum and then an email is sent to all registered forum members.

    A REQUEST FOR CUSOTMERS

You should join the developers forum if you wish to be notified of announcements, updates, free files, tech support and more. Many do not bother to sign up and they are missing out.

    Re: A REQUEST FOR DEVELOPERS

    Mr. Garritan,

A tasteful notification is not spam from my perspective. I've only dealt
with about ten developers, but I can't ever remember getting spammed by
them or any developer I've requested info from. On average I get about 2
emails for sales and 2 for releases, per developer, per year.

It's simple. Have a page on your site to let people sign up if they want
the announcements. Don't make a big multimedia deal out of it, just a
few lines and a link. I don't want to know who thinks your lib sounds
good or who did what with it, through an email. Unless it's
earthshatering like, "man returns from dead; says Hendrix is using GPO
in r&r heaven", but that would be on FOX anyway. Unlike the advertising
in other fields, sample developers seem to know their customers don't
    want lots of ads.

Thanks for your thoughts. A bit disappointed that there are only two
developers responding. I'm probably in the minority wanting to be notified by email, but if I miss a prerelease special on Advanced........(there's no emoticon for pulling a fedora over ones head;-))

I'm completely with you on this one Netherwood. I think all developers should inform their customers via email if there are updates available. It's not spam. It's good customer service.

    Bela D Media,

_The one click method is good, but why limit the info to only registered
users? If I get an announcement stating that Bela is offering Giovani
for 30% off to only users who own all their other titles, I won't be
offended that it doesn't apply to me, I'll know Bela takes care of his
    base.
    Anyway, food for thought.
Thanks for responding. Some developers don't even respond to emails, so it's not too surprising that they're not responding here.

Not responding to emails: Many of our users laugh at how fast we respond by asking if we are glued to laptops. It's pretty simple, customers come first! That statement will ring very clear in the next few days. I think your suggestion is more of a newsletter sign up or even an 'open to the public' company forum. Typically, we would post that type of announcement as a paid advert here and on a few other forums. We are not in the habit of emailing those who are did not ask to be. Truthfully, I am sure there are many of our own user base who do not like to receive emails. We try to keep mass mailings down to once every other month or so.

    Thank you,

    Francis
