    GPO piano (oink, oink)

Since Tom Hopkins encouraged me to be a Listening Room Hog, I thought I'd post a few more of my "learning experiences" (stuff I've done in Finale with GPO in order to learn how to use it)

This one is a crazy tango by Jolivet... occasional "wrong" notes only serve to add spice

    Enjoy!

What wrong notes?! They all sounded right to me! I'm a big fan of Jolivet. As a trumpet player I especially like his concertos and concertinos for the instrument.

The "wrong note" quip reminds me of a story about Thelonius Monk. Approximated from memory, the story goes: A radio show was playing some of Monk's piano music and the DJ commented on how Monk could take "wrong notes" and turn them into something wonderful (or words to that effect.) Monk called up and told the receptionist to tell the DJ that the "piano don't have no 'wrong notes.'" My kind of guy.

The late guitarist Lenny Breau observed that you're never more than a fret away from a "good" note, meaning there's always an interesting way to resolve it (or not)

I am a huge Jolivet fan as well, and have slowly been collecting as much of his music as I can. The local university also has a number of his scores I can study while I listen to the music... grand fun!

"Wrong" notes? Heavens, all sounded very pleasantly consonant to me.

But then -- I've listened to quite a bit of Jolivet over the years; to the point where he's something of a soul brother... lol.

Thanks for this, Jonathan. Fine job on it!

    Thanks, David..

Jolivet takes some getting used to, but the work is worth it.

Have you heard his concertos? I have Piano, harp, cello and ondes martenot concertos of his - very arresting and different music!

The cello concerto I've heard live (some years back, I forget who did the performance; and I think I may have the score to that, somewhere). I believe I also have a more recent recording of one of his trumpet concerti; and I seem to remember studying the piano concerto briefly.

Jolivet's a bit of a musical loose cannon at times -- but hey, you can rarely be bored by him.

I've never heard music quite like this before! Catchy rhythms. Fun piece!

    Heh...

This is one of Jolivet's tamer pieces... as David said earlier in the thread he's kind of a loosa cannon sometimes!
