... or is it a Violin Concerto?

I posted in a Recent Thread a tiny little sketch for violin and piano. I've orchestrated the piano part now, since I'm not sure if this is a sonata or a concerto. What do you all think? Here's the comparison:

    It's a Sonata!
    It's a Concerto!

The orchestral version is still a little rough. Just giving you an idea.

Both versions are good but I have to say, explore the concerto. The colors of the orchestra bring it to life.

Never look at the trombones. It only encourages them. Richard Strauss

I definitely hear it as a concerto. The rhythm propels it along naturally and the colors you can get from an orchestra are definitely worth the time. By the way, I like the quality of the violin with the nice use you made of portamento!

Weeeelllll.... I guess I am the odd girl out on this one. I like both, but I am partial to the Sonata, but I think it's a mood thing for me. The mood of the piano and violin sounds more serious and dark to me, while the orchestration is light and dancing, but it almost sounds slightly comical to me when the violin begins the solo. But, really, both are good, I just prefer coffee to tea today

    Best,
    Paula

PS - I just re-read my post. I certainly didn't mean comical as a negative thing. I just meant bouncy or jovial.

You are asking a forum specialising in utilizing the sounds of an orchestra. So, what did you expect? Of course, a concerto is going to win out over a sonata.

However, in my opinion, the musical "idea" seems better represented/intperpreted by violin and piano.

Yes, I am probaby slightly biased (as a pianist and former-violinist), but I find the piano/violin version to be more convincing.

I'll join the minority vote and say "sonata"... hopefully enough of us will sway the vote and turn THAT into a majority
