    Sean plays the clarinet

Argh, chat room went down ... But that shouldn't deprive anybody of my torturous clarinet playing I just got the clarinet for Christmas, so I still stink I'm trying to teach myself. It's bad....

Most unimpressive - keep up the good work. Grieg would be proud.

    Sean,

Will you use the clarinet as an alternate bow for your new violin?

This is great! That's more than I could get out of the damned thing after a year of fiddling with it.

One thing I did learn, though:

    Use both lips.

And to think I have a Masters in Performance on this instrument!

Keep practicing...Carnegie Hall will still be there!

Thanks for listening... and sorry you lost that time you'll never get back...

You may have recognized the Grieg... but did you recognize the movie theme?

Yeah, my embouchure is pretty terrible right now. I am tiring quickly, as the reed is hard to blow (if that makes any sense). Should I go up or down in reed size? The low notes are especially hard to play.

Also, the tonguing is quite difficult to get into the habit of doing.

I suppose I could use the clarinet as an alternate bow for my violin... it would create some new articulations.

Many thanks for the PMs Styxx!

Don't feel bad Sean. I'll be playing mandolin in a band at the beginning of next month. Guess what? I've picked up a mandolin once. The good thing is? It's a paid gig and it's at a VERY small, small town bar out in the country.

If we don't get kicked out because the mandolin player (me) sucks, then we'll certainly get kicked out because of a drunken brawl with the local hicks.

My plan is to sing louder than the mandolin. That won't work with a clarinet though.

Speaking of.... Wasn't there a post a few months ago from a gentleman in the forum that named his daughter "Claire Annette"? Just curious.

Heck, try playing in a Sackbutt quartet once a month. And yes, it's a REAL instrument.
