The Rookie's got a couple more questions

If I were to get EWQL Orchestra Platinum do I need Giga Studio? It comes with it's own Virtual Instrument so all I would need the lib and Sonar, right?

Also I am guessing that there is a way to use sounds from my Keyboard (Yamaha S-90) on Sonar and in any piece that I write...right?

    Thanks,
    Sherb

You dont need giga studio and yes, you'll be able to also sequence the sounds of your S-90. All you need is SOnar and EWQLSO. Of course you'll have to have a midi interface to connect your S-90 to your computer and a decent sound card to hear your EWQLSO. Also worth mentioning, you'll need a way to mix your S-90 and the sounds coming from your computer together. Like a small mixer and then send the signal to your monitors (Speakers). Hope this helps.

Hi Sherb- I'm a sample rookie as well, but I have been working with MIDI composing using my S90 for quite a while now. Here's my setup: I run MIDI from the S90 via USB cable straight to my computer's USB inputs. It has never failed. My DA-dedicated soundcard is an Echo MIA, which fits into a normal PCI slot. When I'm just working with the S90 (i.e., no other external ins such as mics, guitars, etc.) I run the stereo audio outs of the S90 via two 1/4" cables straight into the stereo audio ins of MIA. That lets me record the sounds into Sonar. MIA then has 1/4" stereo outs for monitoring.

It's a nice, cheap setup- if I remember right, MIA was only $150 or so and it's a great entry-level card.

By the way, how are you enjoying your S90? I bought mine a couple years ago after extensive research and I've been delighted with it. I'm saving up right now to graduate to sample sounds, but its patches have worked great for me in the mean time. No matter what sample library I get, I'll still use the S90's patches for composing in Sibelius.

How much of an upgrade is EWQLSO Platinum? Just more articulations? Worth the extra money?

Would there be any advantage in me having Giga Studio with EWQL or would I only keep Giga (I can still return it) if I were to use it with other libs?

Inkfingers...I should correct myself, I don't currently own the S90 it is what I am GOING to get in the next week or so (not the ES model-the regular one). To me it seems to have the most piano-like feel, similar to that of that Motif ES8 which is what I looked at for a while, 'til I found all of these sample libraries and am heading that route now. The trick is affording everything I want, but prioritizing what I need-a second hard drive, more RAM, the "best" lib, the "best" sampler, the "best" sequencing programs, a better sound card, monitors, endless supply of oatmeal cream pies...

Should I upgrade my sound card? I just have the default one that came in my Sony Vaio. Why do you need the stereo ins/outs as well as the MIDI interface? I know that the MIDI would be for inputting, is the outs strictly for play back?
