    PowerMac with FOUR processors??

    Attention Mac users!

I just saw this. I don't know how I missed this. But I am sure it is not THAT new of news.

But I am sooooo drooling at this:

    Re: PowerMac with FOUR processors??

I did some buying on the apple store - well not really BUYING, but I built a machine that would meet my needs and found out how much it would be. only $5,945. (ONLY!! ) (well, it comes with 2x20inch monitors)

    Here are the specs:

    Specifications

    • 2.5GHz Quad-core PowerPC G5
    • 4GB 533 DDR2 Non ECC SDRAM- 8x512
    • 250GB Serial ATA - 7200rpm
    • NVIDIA GeForce 6600 256MB SDRAM
    • Apple Cinema Display (20" flat panel)
    • Apple Cinema Display (20" flat panel)
    • AirPort Extreme + Bluetooth built-in
    • 16x SuperDrive DL (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
    • Apple Keyboard & Mighty Mouse - U.S English
    • Mac OS X - U.S. English
    • Accessory kit
    • AppleCare Protection Plan for Power Mac (w/or w/o Display) - Auto-enroll

Read the specs on these new Powermacs - right now you can get it with 16 gigabytes of Ram, but in fact, this motherboard can handle not 16 gigabytes, but 4 TERABYTES of ram!!! (whenever that becomes available)

I know coveting is a sin.. but.....

If you're a Logic user, this may eventually be functional. But as the only 4-processor machine in Apple's arsenal, and given that they are abandoning Motorola for Intel very shortly, I doubt if there will be a lot of support for the 4-processor box. Too bad, it looks like a kick-a** machine.

Apple will still be supporting G5's (made by IBM, by the way) for years. They just won't be making any new ones once the Pentium-based Macs are released.

The switch for venders of software from PowerPC G5 to Pentium software-wise is relatively painless depending upon how old it is. VERY MUCH easier that it was when Apple switched from Motorola 68xxx to the Power PC chips back in the mid-90's, because OSX was created from the get-go to be able to run on Pentium AND powerpc chips. There are inhibitors built in the OS right now that won't allow it to run on PCs (without some hacks) But it CAN and will run on Pentium systems.

I think that you might still have a few companies (like Apple with Logic, as you say) develop stuff for this G5 processor at least for another year or two.

Has there been any mention of Logic 7 taking avantage of this Dual-core?

I find the PowerPC thing very ironic. Steve Jobs originally wanted to kill IBM.

This thing sounds like a server. O.o

I'd like to see it benchmarked against some of AMD and Intel's dual core chips.

Macs are too propriatary for my taste though.

I've been looking at this and drooling over the possibilities. Would a machine with this kind of power require a second computer to run samples in say Kontakt 2, while DP is running, or would you just an additional hard drive to stream samples?

Apple says that they will continue using the PPC chips on certain products until 2007. I would say the PowerMacs will be the last to switch over so there should be a few more generations of PPC based Powermacs. That is unless Intel has a new processor set available earlier that Apple likes but right now from what Intel has showed Apple it will be 2007.
