    Free VST Host

    Hey everyone,

This is a bit off subject, but I was wondering if anyone knows of a free VST Host that I can download so I can run multiple VST's through Sibelius via Marble Virtual MIDI Cable. Any ideas?

    Thanks
    Jonny

Sfz certainly runs multiple VST instruments for me in Overture 4 and is free. But I don't know if it meets your needs with Sibelius. http://www.rgcaudio.com/

As a follow on to this, does anyone know of a SFz equivalent for Mac?

    Regards,

    Alex.

Sfz is not a VST host, it's a VSTi plugin (a soundfont player), needing a VST host, which Overture 4 is.

Another soundfont player, SynthFont, is capable of hosting VSTi and VSTfx plugins. But alas (still?) limited to 32 MIDI channels.

Thanks for correcting that and plugging a gap in my limited knowledge. I have been on the point of downloading synthfont a couple of times, but paused after getting a warning message that it could irreversibly affect my settings. However, I have now taken the plunge anyway.

I had a hard time finding ones that are FREE, but......
If you are looking for a host,
    VSTi Host is available here.
    http://www.defectiverecords.com/vstihost/index2.html

And there is FREE one called "Ugly VST"
    http://www.kvraudio.com/get.php?mode=show&id=283

Both Vsti Host and Ugly VST only load one VSTi so it isn't much help.

I have found a host for AU's called Rax that is great. Most of your VSTis also come in the AU variety (Audio Units) GPO, Kontakt, EW stuff, blah blah.
    http://www.grantedsw.com/rax/

This works VERY Well, in fact, AU's seem to run more efficiently on Mac than VST's do. At least that seems to be the case for me.

The only FREE one of these is Ugly VST. but I also am no expert there.
I know that Plogue's BIDULE is a FANTASTIC VST host for Mac as well. DPDAN can tell you all about it. He uses it for his work in Digital Performer.

    Re: Free VST Host

Question from the technically underinformed, regarding digital audio:

What is a soundfont player? Or more specifically, what is the diff between this animal and a sampler like Giga or Kontakt, which is necessary to drive GPO?

Would it make sense for GPO and/or Sibelius, the music programs I chiefly use, to adopt one of the above-mentioned VST animals (doubtless in expanded/customized form) instead of Kontakt? How heavily would they have to be modified?

I personally dislike Kontakt. Its design is primitive, unwieldy, far too artificially tied to old audio hardware mixer design, and has all kinds of limitations and annoying eccentricities. It is an impediment to better performance from GPO and my notation program. But there doesn't appear to be any other big-name software sampler on the market except Giga, which is another problematical program for other reasons. Is there ANY other software sampler out there? I'm surprised some enterprising programmer has not noticed the need and invented a better sampletrap.

    Re: Free VST Host

    Doug,

A soundfont player is a program that, forgive the simple answer here, plays soundfonts. What is a soundfont? it is a set of (often) small samples of instruments. Think of them like mini-GPO's but often a single instrument, like a guitar, a choir, an organ, etc. But some are large and have a LOT of instruments in them. But not nearly as sophisticated or controllable as GPO. They are designed to be used with notation software, (like Finale has its own), in soundfont players that either act as standalone (requiring no host) or as a VSTi. which would require it to be hosted by a program like Sonar, Logic, Cubase, Overture 4, Tracktion, Digital Performer, etc.
GPO Studio is a VST host. It just so happens it ONLY will load GPO sounds.
Kontakt will open soundfonts too. But not the GPO edition of the Kontakt player.

    Hope this helps.

    Sorry Alex,

I didn't carefully read your inital post above.

This isn't free - but is only $15.

I'd say HALion from Steinberg is a fairly big name.
