First real attempt at a GPO orchestral piece

    Hello everyone,

I have just recently completed my first Orchestral Piece since I bought GPO. I know its not perfect, but I'm still learning some finer points (any advice appreciated). And it was done with Sibelius too so go easy on me ;-)

Hi Matt, so sorry your piece isn't getting much love

It sounds like you are having fun with GPO. I am confident that having a tool like GPO teaches us more about the various instruments in an orchestra than we could ever learn anywhere in such a short amount of time. I think your piece provides a nice variety of sounds. Hopefully someone else will post their thoughts.

I won't offer any tips on writing, because I have never done any of that, arranging yes, but no wiriting. Maybe someday. I think it takes a lot of guts to post a work, you have done a fine job. Keep up the fine work Matt!

    Nice work!

There are allot of great sections that are very well done!

My only critique would be in the repetitive theme for it's overall length..
Perhaps fewer variations would create a more dynamic impact.

    ...

    …but that's just my opinion...

Overall, I liked it, very nice!

My one critique, which is of course just my opinion : The length isn't necessarily bad, but I didn't feel there was enough orchestrational variety to make it interesting througout.
I look forward to hearing more of your work!

    Matt,

Very nice composition and as a first effort with GPO...GREAT! I would agree with the others that it could probably benefit from some "tightening up".

just my $0.02, though! Look forward to hearing your next.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. Compositionally it is superb. I like the harmonies and colors you have created as well as the themes. My only critique would be learning to control dynamics, but this is your first attempt. Some of the soft passages are too distant and some of the ff are harsh. I look forward to more of your work. Well done.

Wow! This is a giant endeavor! I think it is very well written. Your compositional skills are definitely evident in this! As for using GPO, it sounds like you are really getting the hang of it. I'm a new user, too and I do not have near the control of the instruments that you seem to already have a knack for. I think that you will easily master it with a bit more tweaking, but you are much closer than I may ever be! Bravo!
    Cheers!

This is very well done piece but... it could do with some deeper reverb to capture the concert hall feel that a piece this expansive should have. It could also make a little more use of some countermelodies against the theme but again, this is purely subjective opinoin.
