    WOW!

    I vote for Entries No. 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 5 & 6

Seriously, they all sound great to me, highly original and completely different from one another. There is no way I could choose one from the other without some additional criteria (like a video clip to narrow the intended mood).

So Bravo everyone, this was HUGELY enjoyable and a complete surprise.

PS I liked the harmonies (those #@%! "French harmonies" as Rimsky-Korsakov put it) in Entry #4.

PPS Entry No. 1 person: please read my comments in this thread here:
(a little additional of a cc#1 hill (0-16 in midi units) on your strings parts would really help!)

I voted more on the basis of structure and rhythm. With this melody being a little "out there" in my view, these works are harder for me to get my head around.

Re: The Orchestration Challenge III Entry Voting

This is definitely going to be a tough vote, but here are my thoughts on each one:

Entry 1: I love how the first note creates a sense of suspense. The orchestral noise in the background is a nice touch. The development of the piece is great, I love how it builds up. But I think the theme is a little harder to recognize in this one, perhaps because of the unique way in which it is used.

Entry 2: I like the choice of a woodwind trio, but I think it could have used more mod wheel data.

Entry 3: Definitely an interesting choice of instruments. I like the tempo change about half way through and the way it ends.

Entry 4: I like the texture of this one, with all the harp glissandos and the woodwinds. Beautifully done. The use of the timpani created a nice contrast.

Entry 5: Another interesting choice of instruments. I like the rhythm. Highly original.

Entry 6: I love the percussion in this one. Definitely had a jazz quality to it. This made me think of a private eye on the prowl.

But which to vote for? I just don't know. But I must choose. My favorite is . . . ugh, this is so hard . . . I gotta go with 4. The orchestration is just so glissy. Takes me to serenity.

It was a very hard vote! Congratulations to all who entered, I enjoyed all of them very much! The theme definitely sounded like a challenge. And thank you for entering! I love hearing the variety between each one, and I hope all who entered will enter the next one as well!

Re: The Orchestration Challenge III Entry Voting

It was a tough choice, much to like about each of them, but I went for #4 in the end. I find myself coming back to this one again and again. Very lovely orchestration.

Well, looks like #4 is in the lead!

I'd still love to hear more people's thoughts about the entries, even if your ultimate vote is kept anonymous.

I liked the 1st entry most. I'll maybe post comments on all pieces when the voting is over.

    Btw. Use your vote!
