    Molly Malone by DPDAN

    Hi everybody!
I have loved this Gene Puerling arrangement of Molly Malone for all my life. It was sung by the HI-LOs way back in the early sixtys when I was about 8 years of age. I came across this record, so I had to copy it by ear of course, I'm pretty sure you guys are tired of hearing that, sorry. I wanted to do a GPO version for fun. I am mostly proud of the fact that it only took two days! WOOT!

It is very weird sounding without lyrics. Also, the choice of instruments that I choose is even more weird, but I think it sounds cool. The mix is kinda bad, and there really needs to be alot of breathing inserted, but I just decided not to waste the time since it was for shear fun. Oh by the way.... I am not going to remix this thing twenty times

    In Dublin's fair city where,
    the girls are so pretty,
was there I first met her, sweet Molly Malone,
    she drove a wheelbarrow,
    through streets broad and narrow,
Crying, "Cockles and mussels, alive, alive oh"!
    she was a fishmonger,
    and that was the wonder,
her father and mother were fishmongers too,
    they drove wheelbarrows,
    through streets broad and narrow,
Crying, "Cockles and mussels, alive, alive oh"!

    She died of the fever,
    And nothing could save her,
And that was the end of sweet,
    Molly Malone.

but her ghost drives a barrow,
    through streets broad and narrow,
Crying, "Cockles and mussels, alive, alive oh"!

Alive, alive oh! alive, alive oh!
Crying, "Cockles and mussels, alive, alive oh"!

Hi Joaz, I didn't think this song would get much love, and I understand that the weird harmonies will cause people to say HUH?

Without being familiar with HI-LOs and Singers Unlimited arrangements (Gene Puerling) it is just too much "out there", especially an orchestral arrangement of a very lyrical song.

It was by ear, I got mine 49 years ago when they were on sale
    Whachoo tawkin bout Willis?
After hearing some of your music, your ears are great!

    Thanks Joaz!

Oh my, but that was fun! Kind of creepy, in a nice sort of way. The harmonies are very strange - for this song, as I know it - but they give a languid, noir-like quality. Tres cool.

As always, Dan, your handling of the instruments is superb.

You lifted this close 4-part harmony from a record? Wow - very impressive ears! I've done a few "lift" arrangements and I know what a tricky exercise it is.

    Dan,

I know that song. My mum used to sing it. Certainly an interesting arrangement. You really got those winds to sing (almost as good as mum ). Superb work as usual.

You are an incredibly talented and gifted person.

Wow Gary, that makes me feel really good!

I hope it brought back some great memories of your Mom. She did a tremendous job of raising you, I think all of us here would agree about that.

Well then, I dedicate this song Molly Malone to all the Moms out there, Mine too

    Thank you very much Gary!
