K8NS 939 Ultra cold boot issues:

Although I no longer appear to have any stability issues with my MOTU PCI-424, I am suffering from a cold boot issue.

Has anyone out there experienced cold boot issues with this motherboard? I have updated the BIOS to the latest, but this has had no effect. It seems to be a completely random issue, and I can see nothing in any logs that would indicate the cause of the problem.

    Thanks Steve

a weak power supply can do this.

also weak power in the wall.

do you have your computer connected to a UPS?

    Scott,

I don't - it's been on my list of things to do. The power supply is the one included with the Sonata II, which I think is the 450W SmartPower II.

I would hope this would be adequate for 4 drives, and 1 DVD.

You suggest looking at a UPS? Once booted (which generally requires physically removing the power), the system runs fine. Although the voltages look a bit "odd"

    Thanks Steve

What exactly do you mean by "cold boot issue"?

Re: K8NS 939 Ultra cold boot issues:

By cold boot I mean that if the machine is booting up after being switched off for some period of time (overnight etc).

Restarting the machine once it's "warmed up", appears to be ok.

I've now also experienced problems installing software. Last night I was installing a large drum sample library, and the installtion process hung. This happened about 5 times, until I gave up and went to sleep.

There was nothing in the event viewer logs to indicate what could have happened. Memory usage, and CPU usage didn't seem to be overly high...

Does anyone have any good methods on how to debug such issues?

    Thanks Steve

Re: K8NS 939 Ultra cold boot issues:

    Well According to SiSoft Sandra:

    CPU Volts 1.39V
    Aux Volts 2.56
    +3.3V 3.23V
    +5V 4.09V
    +12V 12.11V
    -12V -4.46V
    -5V -4.20V
    Standby 4.17V
    Battery 3.10V

    That's not great...

Any ideas how I can tell if this is the PSU or the MB?

    Thanks Steve

Hmm from monitoring these over a couple of reboots, they go up and down like a yo-yo.

    The -5V has been -4.2, -0.98, -1.58 for example.

This would imply that it is the MB would it not?

Re: K8NS 939 Ultra cold boot issues:

    Well I'm stumped...

I tried using the PSU from the old DAW, and the voltages where no better.
Last resort, I swapped the MB out (I get 2 of them so that in time I could build another system), and still no better...

I have no idea what to check now...

Yes, I know that. What's the problem?
