    Question about processors and Gigastudio

Hi folks. I"m still working on designing a DAW for my Gigastudio 3 Orchestra. I was wondering if anyone had opinions about what Gigastudio thinks about:

    1. AMD Athlon X2 dual core processors

    2. Dual Opteron systems

I have heard that Gigastudio is having a problem running with the new X2 processors. Anyone know anything about that?

Can Gigastudio exploit the power of dual core or dual processor systems?

    Thanks ........ Rob

i would say first we hope on a 64bit version then on dual support.
    so: forget about!
i am testing to make the x2 work right now but it constntlly crashing.

Saw an interesting thread over on the Nuendo site about the joys of getting an x2 up and running:

... apparently some problems with Gigabyte motherboards.

Re: Question about processors and Gigastudio

Will Kontakt 2 exploit dual core or dual processor configs? Will it behave better with different processors like maybe the X2 or a dual opteron config?

    Thanks...... Rob

i just tested it and its using both cores, yes.
what do you mean with behave better?
dual opteron in my opinions makes not much sense till tha x2 cam out, at least if you see the money you spend on a opteron system.

Re: Question about processors and Gigastudio

What I meant by 'behave better' is that Tascam says that in release 3.04 they added dual core support and hyperthreading support but even they say that each system is different and that in some the dual cores won't be recognized and in some hyperthreading will have to be turned off. That means a lot could be spent on hardware that doesn't get exploited by the product. So if I go with a Giga solution, I will probably just get a really fast single core processor like an AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 (2.6GHz) or the new FX-57 (2.8GHz).

So that's why I was asking about Kontakt 2. I have already bought the Giga software but it has not been installed anywhere so I could always sell it on ebay. I got a good price on it when I bought it ($370 for orchestra version).

I've never used Giga or Kontakt so trying to make up my mind is really hard. They are obviously both very good products and there's no definitive winner.

But one thing that's really important to me is that I have a great, high end DAW and that the matchup of hardware and software is ideal. A great dual processor or dual core system is of no real value if the software can't use it. All I'm trying to do is put together one of the most kick-~~~ DAWs you can build with some of the best software you can buy. I already know I'll be using Sonar 4 PE and I know Sonar can take advantage of the dual core processor but I'm struggling trying to make a final decision of whether to go with a Giga solution or a Kontakt 2 solution.

As you can see, I still need help...........thanks........... Rob

Re: Question about processors and Gigastudio

before you spend that much money on a fx cpu (or even dualcore) i would buy 2 very cheap pc´s and use gigastudio on it. if you dont use gigapulse that much and route your gigaouts onto a mixer then cpu power is not much an issue. even with a athlon 1600+ you can playback easely up to 250 voices (at least 16bit).
the question if you want to use k2 or giga is actually more a question which lib´s you want to use. but at the end you will own both anyway ;-)
