Instruments of Torture - New Sample Library??

While in Prague, we came across the Museum of Medieval Torture Instruments. Andy Brick and I immediately thought of sampling these rare instruments.

Andy was quick to begin the sample session by applying a stone block to my head. The resulting sound was captured at various dynamic levels and in high fidelity.

I hope the moans and groans were sampled as well, but as a separate keyswitch for maximum flexability in performance.

By the way, what is the transposition for the Cat-O-Nine-Tails??

Dunno, but that stone trick is probably in B-Flat.

First you must realize that the sounds of the Inquisition instruments and those emiting from its transducers (victims) are of a differant tonality and darkness than those of the Renascence periods. In other words a flail is not just a flail - and is most often heard in unison with the subtle but distant creaks and screams of the iron maiden.

It is thought too, the reverb settings betweem dungeons might be paramount to the sampling of these instruments -- possibly the more modest prisons of Ducal mansions compared to imperial castles. Of course our French brethren would need both pro and post guillotine samples for the Bastille grouping of samples.

I am sure it would be a big seller with both Halloween Composers and the more bizarre magicians/composers.

Will there be an Iron Maiden?

I've looked at dozens of instrument-of-torture sample sets... and nobody has an a decent Iron Maiden...

I believe that you are referring only to the early examples as recorded in the Musica Enchiladis...the flails from the so-called "florid" period of the Notre Dame torture school were considerably brighter.

    ;-)
