New Mod Wheel solution: TenCrazy.com Controlta

Haven't burned the midnight oil on writing a new toy/tool in a while, but I got yet another request from a GPO user without a Mod Wheel on his keyboard...

And so the camel's back had one too many straws.

I've written a small utility that allows the user to send Mod Wheel data generated by mouse movement over a virtual control surface. Wave your baton and listen to the dynamics rise and fall! Feel the power...

Well, that is if you can handle a bit of PC configuration work to get a virtual MIDI loopback port working on your machine. If you already have Maple MIDI, MIDI-Yoke, or Hubi's Loopback then you should be fine.

For the brave of heart, go to http://www.TenCrazy.com/ and get Controlta from the "utilities" section. Hopefully the included readme file has enough instructions to get you going.

For the timid of heart, wait a little longer: hopefully we'll work out the kinks.

For the Mac of heart: sorry, but until one of your cute little machines falls into my lap, I'm not going to be able to help! But I imagine someone else may have already written something similar for your platform (Logic environment, etc)...

Have some fun and tell me what's up.

    Brilliant Markleford,

I cannot wait to get back from my travels to try this out. I want to feel the power! Many of the Mod-Wheel Challenged have asked for such a toy and now they have it.

    Thanks Markleford!!!!!

I know you've been waiting for this one for quite a while, Gary: it was one of your earliest requests!

Luckily, since the start of my work on the Yamaha MIDI Guitar / Solo String interpreter software, I've branched out from only working in-host with MFX and now can do things from the outside. Suddenly it dawned on me that little "virtual control surfaces" like this were now possible to create quickly and efficiently, since it's a scripting environment with HTML display.

So hopefully some feedback will start to roll in and improvements can be made. For instance, I suppose I could add mouse-click and hold as a substitute for legato pedal. Also, I can send another CC message for motion in the horizontal direction, but which controller? And should the pad be larger? Smaller? Purpler?

Only time and testing will tell!
