The correct boiling of eggs is one of the great unfathomable mysteries of the universe.

Three minutes: Too short, the white is still runny.

Five minutes? Too long, the yoke is starting to harden.

Somewhere around four minutes is optimal. BUT there's more:

I follow the Atkins nutritional approach, so I eat a lot of eggs, often three at a time rather than the standard two. Have you ever noticed, if you soft boil a few eggs, how much they continue to cook in their own heat after they're served? With the result that the last one you eat is considerably harder than the first!

I have a cunning ruse to counteract this, which involves taking the eggs out of the water at roughly twenty second intervals, then eating them in inverse order to the order they were taken out. Then the last egg eaten has simply made up for its reduced cooking time by continuing to cook in its own heat while on the plate.

Some would call me obsessive compulsive.

    lol...

Partly to counterbalance Mr. "That Hurts," () I don't eat eggs at all. So I'm not sure how to vote. I think the last time I had soft-boiled eggs (20 years ago?) I probably boiled them for about 4 minutes.

Followup questions: Do you eat them with toast? Do you eat the eggs and toast separately? Or do you put the eggs on the toast?

Me? I used to put the eggs on the toast and eat it like an open-faced sandwich.

hot water, 5 minutes, then draining the water and letting it cool down with cold water. We are talking chicken eggs right?

    Naw,
    Dinesour eggs.
Chicken eggs never fill me up. There's nothing like a good rhinoserous egg every morning.

I eat them alone with toast seperatly (did that make any logical sence? ).

What I mean is, I eat them in one of those little egg holders with toast on the side. I sometimes dip the toast in the yolk.

O, so that's why you boil them only 3 minutes
