    POP QUIZ

In 1947, with Truman as president, the CIA (originally called the Central Intelligence Group) was formed. It was an intelligence gathering agency, but was also chartered to perform "other activities".

What was the first international operation by the CIA that went beyond intelligence gathering?

    What? No takers?

Oh well... The answer is that the CIA manipulated the Italian national elections in 1948 to ensure that the Communists didn't win.

So, job one for the CIA was fixing an election. It's what they do best.
