Smile Jaded? Spoiled? Your Favorite Sound...and Eric Persing's ears

Thought this might make a few of us think.

I just got a new Roland Fantom S88 at work and was going through the sounds. A lot of them are nice but I kept thinking "Where is the "Digital Native Dance" patch. Some of you may be too young to remember this patch but it sure sold a lot of D-50 synths for Roland. (ironically it was inspired by a programming error if memory serves me) Remember the old days when Roland or Korg or Yamaha would release a new synth and there'd be a sound on it that you'd never heard before? One that instantly put a smile on your face, one that instantly inspired a song? For me the Roland D-50 was that type of synth. Groundbreaking!

So now we have all of these soft synths with literally 1000's of sounds. Synths, orchestras, basses, drums, etc. Do you have a favorite or are there too many now and even the best just don't stand out?

I guess my favorite sound right now is a toss up between EWQL's Gold Orchestra 60 piece large string section and pretty much anything on Atmosphere. (and I'm chomping at the bit for the trilogy acoustic bass)

    Oh, the good old days!!!

    Darren

Mr Eric Persing seems to be a common thread in my musical tastes. (thank you Eric for the inspirational sounds over all of these years!)

What blows my mind, is it wasnt too long ago, that i was working
on 1 Akai S2000, with 32 megs of memory. I didnt even own
    a Personal computer until 2001.

Now i have QLSO Gold all the Spectrasonics stuff, etc etc...
    ITs absolute insanity.

My newest thing i'm having fun with is Zero G Altered States.
Its got quite a few "never heard that sound before" patches..

    Life is good...

I love so many of the sounds, it's hard to pick.

VSL Horizon Acoustic Guitar is a fave right now. It sounds so great on rhythm section parts, such a nice perfect room setting and very intimate.

Larry Seyer Acoustic Drums are really fun, and are unbelievably expressive and perfect sounding.

Black Grand, ambient version, is a great jazz piano.

Notre Dame de Budapest Organ Samples are KILLER.

    Reaktor, always.

    Scarbee Rhodes and Wurlie...sweet.

    Anything VSL

    Sonic Implants Brass

Dan Dean Woodwinds, combined with GigaPulse.

Giga 3.0 and Gigapulse...just loving it.

My secret weapon is still a 2 trumpet+ 2 trombone patch on an old Mirage in all its 8 bit glory. Add a decent sax and it's Chicago in a box. Dang, I shouldn't have told that.

Current fav to play with is GOS cellos and basses- man, the low end of GOS is sweet! And the Arturai MiniMoog V. Custom patches, of course!!

You won’t believe this but my D-50 is still up and running with the ORIGINAL battery!

Among my favorites (hardware) in my studio are:

    Wavestation A/D (a classic!)
    Triton Rack
An old Roland S-50 Sampler (remember the "free samples for life?")

But my baby is my Roland XV-5080.

Mine too!! 14 years and counting... that was the last keyboard I actually had time to program. All my custom patches are still in it. I hope someone comes out with a virtual one that I can dump them into!

I find myself still going back to Distorted Reality quite a bit. There are definitely a few signature sounds in that library that even though i've heard them 100 times, they still can add something new to an arrangement.

Man, I can't believe I just read that! I have yet to top that sound for pop brass! I haven't had my mirage (or later versions) in my possession for years now, but that's one sample I'll never forget!
