    pop brass samples?

hey guys, I'm looking for a pop brass sound (think quincy jones, disco, rock and roll). I've got gigastudio 2 and the few brass collections I've heard (Dan Dean, East-West) are too orchestral, and even at a velocity of 127 don't quite have the "bite" I'm looking for. Currently I can get closest by cloning a track and sending it to my Roland JV-1010 and the "Super Brass Section" trumpet on gigastudio. It's not cutting it for me. What do you guys recommend for pop brass? I'm also open to soundfonts and Vsti/dxi.

I recently did a MIDI sequence for an opening number for an awards show, and surprisingly I used a lot of SAM trumpets. I also used Quantum Leap Brass. Don't forget that a good SAX library is also important for that pop brass sound.

You might want to check out this library:

    http://www.samples4.com/catalog/prod...roducts_id=106

It’s available in GigaStudio, HALion and several other formats. A VSTi version with an extended sample set is on the way.

    Yoss--

Do you have or have you used this (un-nameable) library? The demos are great, but demos can be deceiving, it's not cheap and I've heard little or no feedback from people actually using it.

No, I’m actually holding out for the VSTi (and hoping it won’t cost an arm and a leg). I agree the demos sound great, definitely the best pop/rock brass demos I’ve heard.

There was a KAB user on cubase.net who posted an amazing KAB demo ( http://forum.cubase.net/forum/Forum4/HTML/013005.html ) but unfortunately he’s taken it down and I didn’t think to save it. Did you read Paul White’s review in SOS?

You might also want to keep an eye out for the upcoming StudioPhonik VSTi from IK Multimedia /Sonic Reality which is supposed to be a kind of ”virtual band plugin” with drums, bass, guitars, keys and brass (the brass part will probably not be as comprehensive as KAB though):

    Hi Mark,

You can read my view on KA-B here: http://www.northernsounds.com/forum/...highlight=KA-B

It's a lovely sample set, but the Halion implementation was below par, particularly for the asking price. After I put a lot of programming work in myself, it's great.

The VSTi will probably be a killer.

    All the best,

    Magnus

So, Magnus. It's been nearly a year since you bought and tweaked the library. How has it fared for you in real-world use? Any demos of funky, horn-heavy stuff you'd like to share?

    Hi Sean,

The past year I have been involved mainly in trying to find a band to play drums with. This hasn't succeeded very well, but it did keep me from working a lot on my own music. But - I am currently working on finishing a track that will feature KA-B horns.

Hopefully I will get there in a couple of weeks...

    All the best,

    Magnus

Cool! If it sounds really good, it will probably cost me about 350 bucks. No pressure, though.

    Hi again, Sean,

Finally, here is my new track with the KA-B horn section: http://stage.vitaminic.se/necessity_and_the_inventions

The track in question is So Long. I use Halion 3 in Cubase SX3 (on Win XP). Hopefully, this will give you some idea of what KA-B sounds like and what can be done with it...

    All the best,

    Magnus
