Let Us Now Praise Unknown Souls

A few weeks ago, a Presbyterian Minister friend of mine in Florida sent me the following text, "Let Us Now Praise Unknown Souls", a hymn for all the unsung heroes in our lives. He wrote his text as a response to "Let Us Now Praise Famous Men", a text set to music by Samuel Wesley, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gerald Finzi, and, undoubtedly, others. Apologies offerred in advance, if the religious tone of this text makes you uncomfortable, but I was so taken by these words I felt they deserved to be set to music.

And so I began to compose...

Let Us Now Praise Unknown Souls
    Text: John A. Dalles, 2004
    Meter: 7.8.7.8.D.

Let us now praise unknown souls
    cherished ones who came before us;
those who set as higher goals
    quiet strength and selfless service!
Let us now praise those who lived,
not for gain and less for glory,
    giving lives and energies
    to pass on salvation’s story!

Who will count the young they led?
    Children taught, each generation!
Who will quote the words they said?
    Where, their day of celebration?
Who can mark the time they spent?
    Listening as our Savior listened.
Who can tell the good they did?
Only those whose lives were lifted?

    None were brilliant soloists.
When they sang, they sang In chorus.
    None were spotlit dramatists.
All their actions were done for us
    None were puffed by compliments.
    Overlooked, the world ignored them.
    Yet, each one was heaven-sent,
Let us sing our praises for them!

Let us now praise unknown souls
    all the ones who came before us;
those who set as higher goals
    quiet strength and selfless service!
    God alone whom we adore,
seal them in your lasting glory
    may they be for evermore
saints for all who love Christ’s story!

...and the new tune named "Cottingham". This arrangment, streamed from GPO Studio, is specifically for the first and last verses:

Please can we just stay with the music and leave out religion and politics. I\'m sure that there are other websites which will satisfy those with strong beliefs. I really don\'t want to have this foisted on me....

Nice organ piece by the way....

    Thanks

Thanks for sharing Glenn, great chords, and the melody is very nice! I enjoyed reading the lyrics as the song played.

    Glenn,
I don\'t think my monitors get as well of a workout with any other piece on this forum as they do with pipe organ! Very inspirational and nice to be able to read along. Beautiful work and musicianship. Always one of my personal favorites to look forward to when I am up on the forum. You bring back so many fond memories with your music. Love it and really soul touching!

    Hello All,

Just pleased to contribute and glad you're enjoying my music. I'm working on a GPO Tutorial for Pipe Organ and once that's done, I'm going to dive into Diva (if you catch my drift) for something different.
