Not sure if it is the first, but both Youtubes are really great. Thank you for those. Just great.

Thanks for sharing this - very interesting. Would have been good to watch them in the reverse order.

It is too big to have this in my"working" room, otherwise I would have ordered one. Great Youtubes though.

    Re: First Virtual Orchestra?

I was originally going to post only the first clip, along with the comment "Words fail me." But then I got to wondering what the instrument was probably designed for (silent movies) and was fortunately able to find a clip to confirm this. Then I found the one that goes through all the voices, so I decided to include that one as well.

I have been writing a musical set in this period (late Victorian through Edwardian times). This was the tail end of "the gilded age", where everything (including the size of orchestras) tended to be excessive, so I became interested in how they actually orchestrated smaller combos (i.e. something not larger than the pit in a current Broadway show). I was delighted to discover these old devices, many of which were built before there was such a thing as a phonograph. The arrangements were quite economical and inventive, and the piano rolls also capture the tempos at which the pieces would have been played (a bit faster than I imagined, as it turns out.) There was even a patented technique that captured the "expression" of the musician who played the parts for the piano roll -- i.e. an early "humanizing" (as opposed to quantizing) -- and all of it mechanical!

A few more clips follow ...

(I wish someone would SAMPLE these.)
