The modern variant of robbing the treasures of the occupied country. In this case, bringing home a pile of economical opportunities. We\'re now living in a civilized world, of course, and we all care for the interests of the Iraqi people.

We aren\'t the Iraqi\'s themselves allowed to chose contractors?

Shame on this man. He\'s a threat to world peace and human rights.

I hope Europe, Russia, Canada and all other \"excluded\" countries will be creative in giving Bush some lessons in international law. If a civilized approach doesn\'t work, maybe some boycot in return will.

And shame on the Dutch Government for kissing Bush and finally landing on this list of elected countries, while the majority of the Dutch population was against this war.

Ivanov, visiting Berlin, said that \"the rehabilitation of Iraq is the world community\'s common cause.\"

\"Those countries which are prepared to assist in Iraq\'s post-war rehabilitation must have all opportunities to do so,\" he said.

Russia is still owed $8 billion by Iraq and Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov indicated it would expect that money to be repaid, adding that Iraq \"was not a poor country\".
<font size=\"2\" face=\"Verdana, Arial\">I guess Ivanov will have to send the invoice to Washington now.

since we have troops being killed by french and russian arms sold after the arms embargo...since the french were skimming funds out of Irag and violated the embargo in other ways...lets not talk of international law....since the mass graves of Irag did not bother the sensitive european conscience.....nor the mass genocide in former Yugoslavia...and since American troops still stand on the wall in western europe (we\'d be glad to bring them home)..since the Marshall plan rebuilt western europe while we \"occupied it\"..maybe you should sit in a little silence until France, German and Russia does something of any moral relevance in the world ....besides live off the debt of an Irag freed from the gangster they so avidly did business with.

Wait a second there, moosetree. Slow down, now. France and Germany were members of NATO, which was actively searching for arms in Iraq when it were told to pull out, so the US could invade. Nato found few arms. Neither has the US. France, Germany, and other NATO countries were doing something--the right thing. They were opposed to war, which is what NATO is supposed to be opposed to. NATO was right. The US was incorrect and knew it: the administration knew that the evidence it claimed justified an invasion was falsified. (Must I go on about how it outed a CIA officer to Robert Novak in retribution for this falsehood being exposed by her husband?) So companies in these countries are being punished for being in a country whose leadership opposed what has now been demonstrated to be an unprovoked attack that killed an estimated 10,000 citizens. (That\'s kids and their mothers and old people. Most of the young men were in the army, one of the few ways to make money in Iraq. Obviously, many more of them were killed.)

And I have to admit, I don\'t understand the anger at France: the Pope came out very early as opposing an invasion. The Muslim population is also quite large in France. Expecting the French to support an invasion of Iraq, in those circumstances, is like expecting them to erect a monument to Admiral Nelson in the Place du Concord.

France and Russia were selling arms to Irag
and getting oil on the sly...France and Russia were consulting Sadaam after the war started....
...so let us speak of \"interests\"....again we are recovering arms used against us supplied by the French and Russians...those peace loving bastions of pro democracy....lets see now when did France use military action in Africa? and Russia commit atrocities in Chechnia? ...I don\'t see any mention of THAT.....Iragis are not naming their children after Chirac! We could talk of Iraqi missile parts made in Germany and guidance systems made in Russia...but they don\'t make the BBC do they.....it is clear the Moslem populations in France are not to be upset..therefore antisemitism continues to rise
and little \"krystalnachts\" are appearing in many places.....

    Moosethree,

If the US troops wouldn\'t have invaded and occupied Iraq, those French weapons you refer to wouldn\'t have made those victims.

No weapons of mass destruction found.

Remember? That was the ONLY public cause for starting this war.

Don\'t you see your president is sacrificing young men and women for his ideas about world \"peace\" and ECONOMICAL goals?

Of course everyone has an agenda. A public one and a hidden one.

I just think that Bush\'s agenda is a hideous one.

Iraqis should be rebuilding Iraq. Instead, US corporations close to Bush will be doing it. The fact that European governments are trying to get in on the action, shows that they are not that much better than the awful, criminal, US government. It\'s a dog eat dog world. We are not the enlightened creatures that we claim to be. Few people realize how truly reckless and stupid the human race is. The US only has 1% of its topsoil left. The rest has washed into the sea, due to idiotic, greedy farming practices. That should worry you. It\'s the kind of thing that should concern our presidents greatly. I think that a detailed look at governments and capitalism (in it\'s present state), can only yield one conclusion: Catastrophe is coming. Catastrophe won\'t come from some suitcase nuclear bomb, it will come from the most powerful government on earth and its policies. It will come from a complete disregard for the natural balance of the earth. It will come from the reckless race to use up all the earths resources and leave nothing but piles of unrecyclable garbage for the next century. It will come from our irresponsible and ignorant relationship with technology. But most of all, it will come from the ignorance that is enforced upon the people of the USA.

...the weapons of mass destruction were transported elsewhere and hidden, French intelligence before the war had no different conclusions that US or British Intelligance....Iraqi missile deals were being made with North Korea for long range missiles....American soldiers stand on the wall between them a South Korea....as they do in so many other places.....are you really saying France and Russia were not capitalizing on the oil bounty of Saddaam\'s terrorizing state? How much money and blood has the French sucked out of African colonies....and are their recent military interventions to save the environment?
Your not going to like the decisions we make, but your not going to make them..if fact your not going to do anything....massive genocide last occurred in Europe and what did the French and the Russians do about it...

Re: Occupation of Iraq by US now finally official

Doubtless many French and Russian arms are found in the hands of Iraqis. And American-made arms. Prior to the first Gulf war, almost anyone could legally ship arms to Iraq and neighboring countries. Many Russian arms, in addition, were seized by Afghan troops, such as those who served with Bin Laden, whom the US provided with weapons.

Moreover, the ability of any one country to control exports by companies within its borders is notoriously limited. The arms trade is a multibillion dollar industry that knows little boudaries. It makes profits by selling to everyone. The more sold, the more likely war is to break out, which leads to an increase in gun sales. (Read Anthony Sampson\'s The Arms Bazaar.) To blame countries such as Russia and France because weapons manufactured there found their way into Iraq is a little astonishing.

Yes, France and Russia were in contact with Hussein after the \"war\" started. Why don\'t you mention what they were discussing? They were trying to get him to surrender. Was this partly to protect their own interests, instead of from humanitarian interests? Maybe, but at least they took this route. Russia could have instead lent more military aid.

You also claim that France and Russia whave been smuggling oil. I haven\'t seen reports of this. Does this mean that you\'ve read that they are buying oil without going through US intermediaries? Are Russia and France owed millions of dollars by Iraq? Is the US threatening to cancel all the debts of the old Iraqi state? How would this sound if the situation was reversed: The US was invaded by Russia, which seized all of its assets. To fulfill ongoing contracts, some US companies secretly continued to sell oil to another country that had opposed its invasion. This country, in buying the oil, is then smuggling?
