GPO and win98SE+1GB of RAM question

is GPO tested with win98SE? with how much memory?

i know that there are some problem for this kind of OS to handle more than 512 MB of RAM.
i don\'t want to upgrado to XP because i have both hardware and software which is not supported.
but i am building my new PC and i\'m in doubt wheter to mount 512 or 1GB of RAM...
can you halp me?

Re: GPO and win98SE+1GB of RAM question

I have not used the player in Win 98 but have used Kontakt 1.2.1 though which works fine. The player should work fine but please note that NI develops all PC stuff for WinXP including Kontakt 1.5. Since Win98 is a 6 year old OS, it is getting out of date. Even Windows XP has now been out for 2 years.

Put at least 1 GB in any new PC your building. The cost is under $100 to add the extra 512 MB.

Hi Bosone,

I had exactly the same question and found the following information about the compatibility of Windows 98SE with large amounts of memory:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=184447

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/Q253/9/12.asp&NoWebContent=1

I was directed to this information by this forum message:
http://www.computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/149761.html

According to this information, it is possible to use 1 Gb or more memory in Windows 98SE, but you have to change some settings in the SYSTEM.INI file. You should probably do this BEFORE you install the extra memory.

Please note that I have not tested it yet, but I trust that I will get it working, so I ordered my extension to 1 Gb today.

By the way, the main reason of NOT upgrading to Windows 2000, is that I understood from earlier posts on this forum that GigaStudio works better and/or more stable under Windows 98SE then under Windows 2000. Is this still true?

Greetings,

Rob.

<font size=\"2\" face=\"Verdana, Arial\">The basic problem is that Microsoft made a bunch of idiotic choices. Adding too much memory causes selector exhaustion, which can result in all kinds of nastiness. I found this out myself when I tried to add memory, and you can get more details from Microsoft\'s knowledge-base.

Re: GPO and win98SE+1GB of RAM question

If running Giga I would stay with Win98. If just using GPO and a sequencer I would recommend Windows XP. NI is doing all there development for Kontakt for WinXP per their forum posts. Newer versions of Kontakt haven\'t even been tested in Windows 98 so it may or may not work.
