GOS Impulse Resonses in Altiverb?

I\'m an enthusiastic owner of Audioease Altiverb. For those who don\'t know it\'s a real time reverb plug in for Digital Performer that uses convolution to apply real acoustic spaces to your audio. HTDM, RTAS and VST versions have just been released. It sounds stunningly good, no Lexicon, even a 960 comes close for simulating real spaces IMHO. Check out the demo at http:// www.audioease.com if you don\'t believe me.

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone has succesfully imported the impulse responses that come with the GOS upgrade disks into Altiverb. I like the idea of putting my Giga \"orchestra\" in the same room as GOS, especially the drier libraries like DD woodwinds.

    Hi Hasen

I did all those pieces on the site a while ago before I got Altiverb and Gigastudio. The reverb on all of them is a home made Lexicon MPX500 patch that I tried to make sound like Abbey Road Studio 1 ;-)

I had a listen to the GOS impulse responses since I posted and they don\'t sound like a pistol shot or a sweeping tone exciting a room which I think is what Altiverb is expecting to hear. I\'ll have a go at importing them myself next week.

Hi Dave, I agree with you on the quality of Altiverb and I of course use it myself. I\'ve tried the impulses that come with GOS and while I seem to have imported them correctly they don\'t sound very good. I was told by Kingidiot and Gary that these impulses are great, possibly the best so there must be something going wrong somewhere...

Btw did you use Altiverb on the orchestral demos at your website?

    <font size=\"2\" face=\"Verdana, Arial\">It is indeed Mac only - Alti = Altivec.

Well I got them to work Dave, but only in mono to stereo or stereo to stereo mix mode - and I have to say they\'re beyond wonderful! You might as well trash all your other impulses as this is the true Hollywood sound courtesy of Lincoln center. I find I don\'t even have to EQ my tracks any more, or even provide many different distances for the instruments to get that Hollywood sound...which to be honest I didn\'t even have before. Well I don\'t see how you can without this impulse.

Anyone after the Hollywood sound should get this impulse, its worth the price of the whole GOS library on its own! I\'m not exagerating for a second. However, I doubt it would sound this good without Altiverb of course.

    Hi Hasen

I\'ll have to give it a go this week if I can find a minute or ten. What did you do the second time that was different from the first time you tried?

Can\'t wait to hear them :-)

Re: GOS Impulse Resonses in Altiverb?

Well there was a bug in Altiverb VST which it seems was causing the problem. Its been fixed now with update 2.03. If you import the impulse into an audio editor and export it as two separate left and right files then they will be ready to use in Altiverb - no need to put them through the IR processor.

Then all you need to do is name them and the folders they\'re in correctly and Altiverb will see them. If you select Stereo to Stereomix mode then you should see them in there.

Btw I\'m in the UK as well.

Re: GOS Impulse Resonses in Altiverb?

Thanks for this thread. I loaded the impulses into Altiverb DP. Man they are gorgeous!

What impulse do you like the best? I think I prefer the 2nd Hall and roll the reverb time back to about 90%. The \"Hollywood\" impulse is interesting but it feels phased or the EQ is just plain weird. To my ears anyway.

The Altiverb stereo to stereo impulses sound \'sweeter\' to my ears. The GOS/Cholakis impulses are in a another league but it would have been so much better if they were stereo to stereo. I wonder if they could be converted? But Hasen is right; it will be hard to go back and use the Audio Ease files after hearing this. Truly remarkable....and a real surprise!

Re: GOS Impulse Resonses in Altiverb?

I use concert hall 1 the most, with the tail at about 70 or 80%. I don\'t really know what the Vintage Hollywood one is but I haven\'t found a use for it. The stereo to stereo impulses are more transparent and great for smoothing things without colouring the tails. The GOS ones are great for putting the orchestra into the kind of ambience real film score orchestras are recorded in.

Unfortunately I don\'t think they can be converted to stereo to stereo. They would need to be recorded with proper left and right on each side.
