Hello,

first I want to apologize that I had to post this book tip here - honestly.
I got no response from Northernsounds so far for an official add, so please
be patient (@Admin, please contact me via e-mail, stored in my profile!).

I just want to announce a new book, which has been released:
The Composer’s Approach Volume 1 - Principles on Room Acoustics and Techniques for Digital Orchestras
ISBN-13: 9783837084535

http://www.the-composers-approach.com/book.jpg

It is mainly about how to place dry samples in virtual room.
Starting point are information about room acoustics, and why we can locate a sound source in a room quite well.
Further on it is described how to use this knowledge within a sequencer.

Here is the offical product description:

This book explains the principles on room acoustics and basic working techniques for sample-based orchestras.
Learn the basics of sound localization and how to use this knowledge to place any instrument in a virtual room –
independently of the music software used. Benefit from the detailed value tables of an example orchestra seating
(American seating), and create realistic panning and room depths instantly with your dedicated plug-ins.

The procedures are described step by step and are directed at any musician working with orchestra libraries.

Book contents:
• General Room Acoustics
• Sound Localization
• Early Reflections
• Room Depths
• General How-To
• Walkthrough for Cubase 4 and Samplitude 10
• Examples for SIR2, Origami, DreamVerb, and Other Plug-Ins
• Tips for Kontakt 3 and Vienna Instruments
• Techniques for Samples
• General Value Tables for Instant Use (Software-Independent)

Official website of the puplisher:
http://www.the-composers-approach.com/

Audio demos:
http://www.the-composers-approach.com/audiodemos.php

Book samples:
http://www.the-composers-approach.com/v1samples.html

There is already a German version in process and available mid of February.
This will be the 2nd edition of "Das digitale Orchester", which was released in 2008-09

The English version is available now in any book store.

Best regards,
Mike

This book arrived at my house today, and it appears to contain a great deal of helpful information. There is a "correct" amount of math)(~but the math is then translated into instructions that we can use to tweak our reverbs, EQs, delays, and DAW tracks...double)(~!!
For those of you who are interested in creating good "front-to-back" simulation as well as good "side-to-side," this book promises to offer much food for thought.
I plan to start working with it this week and applying its advice to some of my concert band stuff.
It's specially helpful for the 9x% of us who don't have the time it takes to discover all this on our own.

The book samples have been extended a bit,
to get a look on the contents about "putting instruments into a virtual room":

Just wondering if you've had a chance to try any of the principles in the book snorlax? No hurry, but as you alluded to the front to back perspective is the hardest thing to render with samples in my opinion.

'Mornin', Steve...

Getting around to this "front-to-back" issue is item #14327 on my post-tax-season, post-recitals list of things to do!

ALSO: I just played a friend's doctoral recital at IU and have another one scheduled for a Friend at Butler. Nothing like being an outsider with the entire brass faculty at IU sitting in the hall!
The Butler group includes two guys from the ISO, so that is stress-producing as well!!

So gimme about three weeks!!

Hi Mike,
I have just received a copy of your book and my "early reflections" are that it will be quite helpful to me. Your writing on the basic principals of acoustics has already expanded my understanding. I will post again after I have finished the book and have had a go at applying the techniques.
Best Regards,John

Understood. I was just wondering and good luck with the recitals.
